{"id":92739,"date":"2021-10-13T06:03:39","date_gmt":"2021-10-13T05:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=92739"},"modified":"2021-10-13T06:03:39","modified_gmt":"2021-10-13T05:03:39","slug":"osinbajo-not-calling-for-naira-devaluation-laolu-akande-clarifies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/13\/osinbajo-not-calling-for-naira-devaluation-laolu-akande-clarifies\/","title":{"rendered":"Osinbajo NOT calling for naira devaluation, Laolu Akande clarifies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Laolu Akande, media aide to Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice-President of Nigeria has clarified that his principal did not call for the devaluation of the naira.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that Osinbajo on Monday at the midterm review of President Buhari&#8217;s second term in office called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to allow the naira reflect the realities of the market.<\/p>\n<p>According to the vice-president,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the exchange rate is artificially low and deterring investors from bringing foreign exchange into the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At the official market, the naira is changing at N411 to $1 and N570\/$1 at the parallel market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Many believe the parallel market rate is a reflection of its true value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Explaining the comments credited to his principal via a statement on Tuesday, Akande said<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Osinbajo\u2019s comment was wrongly mischaracterised as a call for devaluation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said the VP was instead advocating for a forex policy that curbed arbitrage and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/17\/how-i-made-ribadu-drop-corruption-charge-against-my-kinsman-chinyeaka-oha-ken-nnamani\/\">corruption<\/a>, thereby offering customers cheaper dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cOur attention has been drawn to statements and reports in the media mis-characterising as a call for devaluation, the view of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN that the Naira exchange rate was being kept artificially low,\u201d the statement reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cProf. Osinbajo is not calling for the devaluation of the Naira. He has at all times argued against a willy-nilly devaluation of the Naira.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cFor context, the Vice-President\u2019s point was that currently the Naira exchange rate benefits only those who are able to obtain the dollar at N410, some of who simply turn round and sell to the parallel market at N570.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt is stopping this huge arbitrage of over N160 per dollar that the Vice-President was talking about. Such a massive difference discourages doing proper business, when selling the dollar can bring in 40% profit!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis was why the Vice-President called for measures that would increase the supply of foreign exchange in the market rather than simply managing demand, which opens up irresistible opportunities for arbitrage and corruption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt is a well-known fact that foreign investors and exporters have been complaining that they could not bring foreign exchange in at N410 and then have to purchase foreign exchange in the parallel market at N570 to meet their various needs on account of unavailability of foreign exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cOnly a more market reflective exchange rate would ameliorate this. With an increase in the supply of dollars, the rates will drop and the value of the naira will improve.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to Akande, the real issue confronting the economy on this matter is how to improve the supply of foreign exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He, however, said the problem would not be solved if mechanisms like the Importers and Exporters (I&amp;E) forex window don\u2019t work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIf we allow this market mechanism to work as intended, we will find that the naira will appreciate against the dollar as we restore confidence in the system,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Laolu Akande, media aide to Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice-President of Nigeria has clarified that his principal did not call for the devaluation of the naira.
