{"id":9467,"date":"2021-03-17T03:33:13","date_gmt":"2021-03-17T02:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=9467"},"modified":"2021-03-17T03:33:13","modified_gmt":"2021-03-17T02:33:13","slug":"senate-to-probe-governors-role-in-n6-25bn-nddc-palliative-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/17\/senate-to-probe-governors-role-in-n6-25bn-nddc-palliative-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate to probe governors\u2019 role in N6.25bn NDDC palliative fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, on Tuesday, said it would probe the nine governors of the Niger Delta region for their involvement in the N6.25bn Niger Delta Development Commission palliative scam.<\/p>\n<p>The nine governors were said to have collected N100m each from the Niger Delta Development Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman of the panel, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, stated this while speaking with journalists in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Akwa-led management had up till Thursday to produce Prof Keme Pondei and his team or risk being arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Akinyelure said, \u201cWe have already gone through the process of warrant of arrest and we have reached 95 per cent stage of completion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, for the avoidance of doubt, immediately the warrant of arrest was issued, representatives of the sole administrator came to my office and verbally explained how the money was spent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey claimed that N100m each was given to the nine state governors in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/22\/senate-issues-warrant-of-arrest-on-prof-pondei-led-imc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Niger Delta region<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now asked them to make written submission on their claims to reach us before March 15, which was Monday, but up till today (Tuesday), we have not seen anything. This particular probe will not be swept under the carpet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, we are calling on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/12\/buhari-ends-25-years-wait-inaugurates-nddc-permanent-headquarters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NDDC<\/a> sole administrator to either produce the Pondei-led interim management committee team or make available the position paper on how the palliatives were shared on or before 3pm on March 18 so that we can study the submissions before March 29, when they are expected to defend their position papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will now call the governors to come and account for it, because none of the 27 senators from the Niger Delta region is aware of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/20\/police-intercepts-lorry-load-of-palliatives-mattresses-in-bayelsa-arrest-two-suspects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19 palliative<\/a> shared to the governors by the NDDC.
