{"id":95607,"date":"2021-10-19T18:43:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-19T17:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=95607"},"modified":"2021-10-19T18:43:00","modified_gmt":"2021-10-19T17:43:00","slug":"chloera-adamawa-confirms-23-deaths-500-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/19\/chloera-adamawa-confirms-23-deaths-500-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"Chloera: Adamawa confirms 23 deaths, 500 cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government of Adamawa has disclosed that it has recorded a total of 500 cholera cases with 23 deaths since the outbreak of the disease in the state.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Tuesday by the director of public health in the state ministry of health,\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Celine Laori.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to Laori,<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0the local government areas worst-hit by cholera included Yola North, Girei and Lamurde.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSince the outbreak of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/25\/british-mum-of-two-who-was-too-young-to-have-breast-cancer-dies-of-disease-weeks-after-wedding\/\">disease<\/a> in the state in September till date, we have recorded about 500 suspected cases and 23 deaths,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMajority of those affected were treated and discharged.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">She called on the people of the state to maintain basic hygiene and sanitation, as well as ensure that food and water to be taken are safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), atleast 81,413 suspected cases of cholera have been<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0recorded 28 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A total of 2,791 deaths have also been recorded since January 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The agency said children aged between five and 14 have been the most affected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">NCDC also said the outbreak has been worsened by lack of access to clean water, open defecation and poor hygiene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Following the rapid rise in the infection rate, the NCDC activated the national cholera emergency operations centre (EOC) in June.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">National rapid response teams (RRTs) with essential materials have been deployed to nine states \u2013 Zamfara, Bauchi, Benue, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Plateau, Jigawa, Niger \u2014 and the FCT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Surveillance, case management, and sensitisation are also ongoing in affected states.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government of Adamawa has disclosed that it has recorded a total of 500 cholera cases with 23 deaths since the outbreak of the disease in the state.
