{"id":96196,"date":"2021-10-21T06:25:21","date_gmt":"2021-10-21T05:25:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=96196"},"modified":"2021-10-21T06:25:21","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T05:25:21","slug":"nimasa-nigeria-recorded-four-incidents-of-piracy-in-9-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/21\/nimasa-nigeria-recorded-four-incidents-of-piracy-in-9-months\/","title":{"rendered":"NIMASA: Nigeria recorded four incidents of piracy in 9 months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has disclosed that the country reported four incidents of piracy in the first nine months of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The figure represented a 77 percent drop compared to the same period last year, according to NIMASA.<\/p>\n<p>The director-general of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/27\/probe-n1-5trn-fraud-allegation-levelled-against-me-nimasa-dg-tells-efcc\/\">NIMASA<\/a>, Bashir Jamoh said the reduction was<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0reflected in the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) third-quarter 2021 report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to NAN report,\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jamoh explained that the latest figures came following the launch of the Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure, also called the Deep Blue Project, on June 10 by President Muhammadu Buhari.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by Edward Osagie, the assistant director, public relations of the agency.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cNigeria reported four incidents in the first nine months of 2021, in comparison to 17 in 2020 and 41 in 2018,\u201d the statement quoted Jamoh as saying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis represents a 77 percent decrease in incidents between 2021 and 2020, and 95 percent reduction from 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe IMB also reported a 39 percent reduction in piracy and armed robbery incidents in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The DG also said that the agency had put in place measures to sustain the current momentum of security in the country\u2019s waters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are delighted by this latest news from the IMB and the trend of progressive reduction in piracy and related incidents on our waters,\u201d the NIMASA boss said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cBut we cannot afford to be complacent about our commitment to the security of our maritime domain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe will continue to strive for more effective measures to keep Nigerian waters safe and secure,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jamoh quoted the IMB as saying that the Gulf of Guinea region recorded 28 incidents of piracy and armed robbery in the first nine months of 2021, in comparison to 46 for the same period in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe piracy reporting agency explained that crew kidnappings in the region had dropped with only one crew member kidnapped in Q3, compared to 31 crew members taken in five separate incidents during Q3 2020,\u201d Jamoh said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAll Q3 incidents were also against vessels at port anchorages, whilst the average successful kidnapping location in Q3 2020 was approximately 100NM from land.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div>He added that the overall reduction of piracy and armed robbery incidents in the region was testaments of enhanced maritime security and response coordination measures adopted by regional and national authorities.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has disclosed that the country reported four incidents of piracy in the first nine months of 2021.
