{"id":96793,"date":"2021-10-22T13:22:51","date_gmt":"2021-10-22T12:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=96793"},"modified":"2021-10-22T13:22:51","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T12:22:51","slug":"banks-reportedly-make-covid-19-vaccination-compulsory-for-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/22\/banks-reportedly-make-covid-19-vaccination-compulsory-for-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"Banks Reportedly Make COVID-19 Vaccination Compulsory for Staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigerian banks have reportedly issued directives mandating staff to get vaccinated against COVID-19, or post negative covid-19 results every two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by TheCable, six banks shared circulars to their workers asking them to get vaccinated or conduct COVID-19 tests on a bi-weekly basis at personal cost.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that last week the federal government mandated civil servants to get vaccinated against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/2021\/01\/27\/covid-19-fg-directs-civil-servants-to-work-from-home\/\">COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), said unvaccinated workers would be barred from entering their places of work from December 1, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Mustapha is also the chairman of the presidential steering committee (PSC) on COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are required to obtain a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/27\/covid-19-delta-govt-directs-workers-on-levels-1-12-to-resume-work\/\">COVID-19<\/a> test on a bi-weekly basis and submit at their zonal offices or headquarters,\u201d one of the circulars read.<\/p>\n<p>The staff of Polaris, Access, Zenith, Union, Eco, and GT banks confirmed the latest development on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>They confirmed that they were given two options; get a COVID vaccine jab or present negative coronavirus test results every two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are the options. If you are not taking the vaccine, then you\u2019ll have to show your test result every two weeks,\u201d an Access bank staff said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout this, they said a staff will not be able to enter into the banking hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another bank staff at Polaris said the options sound lenient but indirectly mandated compulsory COVID-19 vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is annoying that they have to mandate us. How much is our salary that someone will be conducting a COVID test every two weeks? A COVID test costs about N50,000,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Two bankers at Ecobank also confirmed the development but declined to speak further on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Osita Nwanisobi, CBN\u2019s spokesperson, did not reply to enquiries seeking comment on the compulsory COVID-19 vaccine adoption by the banks.<\/p>\n<p>Since February 2020, Nigeria has recorded more than 200,000 cases and almost 3,000 deaths across 36 states and the federal capital territory.<\/p>\n<p>While the federal government has mandated vaccination for workers, state governments are also planning to make it compulsory.
