Khan is seeking the authorisation to investigate the abduction of students in Nigeria\u2019s North, closure of schools, and the persistent failure of the federal and state authorities to end the abduction.<\/p>\n<p>The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) made this announcement on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>SERAP had in a petition in September urged Khan to push for the trial of those suspected to be responsible and complicit in the crimes.<\/p>\n<p>The rights group said the severe and lifelong harms that result from depriving children the right to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/07\/bandits-invade-katsina-college-of-education-abduct-deputy-provosts-three-sons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">education<\/a> satisfy the gravity of harm threshold under the Rome Statute.<\/p>\n<p>In an October 22 letter with Ref. No. OTP-CR-363\/21, Khan told SERAP that the criteria for a probe into a string of abductions have been met.<\/p>\n<p>The letter signed on the prosecutor\u2019s behalf by Mark P. Dillon, Head of Information and Evidence Unit, noted that the preliminary examination of the petition is considered complete.<\/p>\n<p>It said under Article 53 of the Rome Statute, the next step in the judicial process \u201cis to prepare and submit a request to the Pre-Trial Chamber for authorisation to open an investigation on Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce submitted, the request will be made publicly available on the Court\u2019s website: www.icccpi.int.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour communication will be forwarded to the relevant team to be analysed, together with other related communications and other available information, in the context of any future investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/17\/serap-takes-president-buhari-to-court-over-n4-8bn-budget-to-monitor-whatsapp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SERAP<\/a> hailed the ICC prosecutor for taking a significant step toward ensuring that persons responsible for the atrocities against schoolchildren are exposed.<\/p>\n<p>The civil society organisation said impartial justice and reparation will deal a decisive blow to impunity of perpetrators, and improve access of Nigerian children to education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe victims of these crimes deserve justice. SERAP will work closely with the ICC to achieve these important objectives\u201d, deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare assured.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/13\/abducted-students-staff-of-fgc-birnin-yauri-kebbi-regain-freedom-after-four-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">27 students and 3 teachers abducted from the Federal Government College<\/a>, Birnin Yauri in Kebbi, regained freedom last week after for four months.<\/p>\n<p>Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu told the victims to consider their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/23\/how-i-plotted-my-cousins-kidnap-and-murder-to-avoid-repaying-n1-4m-i-owed-her-suspect-tells-kaduna-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kidnap<\/a> as a trial from God.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven Prophets of Allah, who are the best and most faithful people, had been tested and tried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing is certain: if you are tested and tried and you become patient, the sky is your limit and only Allah knows your reward\u201d, Bagudu said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor, Karim A.
