{"id":98592,"date":"2021-10-27T08:22:03","date_gmt":"2021-10-27T07:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=98592"},"modified":"2021-10-27T08:22:03","modified_gmt":"2021-10-27T07:22:03","slug":"nigerias-petrol-subsidy-payments-slow-attainment-of-sdgs-sanusi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/27\/nigerias-petrol-subsidy-payments-slow-attainment-of-sdgs-sanusi\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria\u2019s petrol subsidy payments slow attainment of SDGs &#8211; Sanusi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi has stated that petrol subsidy payments slow the attainment of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Nigeria by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In seven months, petrol<\/span>\u00a0subsidy payments gulped N714 billion<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, shrinking monthly revenue accrued to the federation account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sanusi while s<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">peaking on Tuesday at a panel session during the 27th Nigerian Economic Summit (NES) in Abuja, Sanusi said the country needs to prioritise expenditure on sectors such as healthcare and education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cDoes the Nigerian state even consider development as its critical priority?\u201d Sanusi asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cForget the noise, where are we spending our money? We spend more money on debt service, fuel subsidy, overheads on the national assembly and not education, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/16\/fbi-arrests-celebrated-nigerian-medical-doctor-nwaokwu-for-multimillion-dollar-healthcare-fraud\/\">healthcare<\/a>\u00a0that countries like Ghana and Rwanda are spending.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The SDGs are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to end poverty, reduce inequality and build more peaceful, prosperous societies by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sanusi said that the country is paying a heavy price by taking resources meant for critical sectors to spend on subsidy payments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAt the level of the state we are, we have to decide what the priority is. So long as our spending sends the wrong signals and the bulk of our resources are going to the wrong areas, we are not going to reach the goals of the SDGs,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said the biggest accelerator to the attainment of the SDG goals is political leadership that understands what development entails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIf we do not as a nation, at the level of leadership understand that development is about human beings; everything we are doing will come back and hurt us,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSo, the biggest accelerator is having a political leadership that understands that the state should be developmental and not a popular state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cFor the last 20-30 years, we have turned the state into a populous and righteous state, the focus has to be interrogated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sanusi noted that the country needs to build a national consensus and the consciousness has to be at the top \u2014 the governorship and legislators have to agree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe need a mind change. It is something that the states need to exit. For those poor people, whoever is sitting; the governor or the state should think of those people first,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhen you do that is when you make the right investment in education, health and the right policies that will help us to reduce poverty, if we don\u2019t do all these, we cannot accelerate the SDGs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi has stated that petrol subsidy payments slow the attainment of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Nigeria by 2030.
