{"id":99058,"date":"2021-10-28T06:31:08","date_gmt":"2021-10-28T05:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=99058"},"modified":"2021-10-28T06:31:08","modified_gmt":"2021-10-28T05:31:08","slug":"nycn-applauds-firs-for-crackdown-on-tax-defaulters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/28\/nycn-applauds-firs-for-crackdown-on-tax-defaulters\/","title":{"rendered":"NYCN applauds FIRS for crackdown on tax defaulters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has applauded the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for boosting tax revenue in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The applaud was made by the national president of the NYCN, Solomon Adodo while s<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">peaking at a media briefing in Abuja.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Solomon said the FIRS is a proactive revenue-generating agency that takes its mandate very seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Adodo said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/13\/firs-generated-n4-2-trillion-in-first-nine-months-of-2021-nami\/\">Muhammad Nami<\/a>, FIRS chairman, has initiated and implemented several strategic reforms aimed at making tax administration more effective, particularly through expanding the national tax net.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe determination of the Nami-led FIRS to go after some big and hitherto untouchable tax offenders has continued to gain traction,\u201d Adodo said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cFor example, many businesses that either did not pay taxes or did not pay the correct amount have been made to pay under the very deliberate programme of the management.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Adodo further advised Nigerians to support effective tax administration in Nigeria, which according to him, is being provided by the FIRS under the \u201cdexterous leadership\u201d of Nami.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe must not forget in a hurry that recently FIRS came down heavily on some notable big tax offenders and made them pay their outstanding tax liabilities,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAnd so, every attempt made by such tax defaulters to intimidate FIRS to make it shirk its patriotic duty was firmly and roundly rebuffed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe know that some people somewhere would wish to continue with their tax crimes. But we say a big NO to that. It is about time that, as Nigerians, we focused on development instead of petty politics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to PUNCH,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0FIRS earmarked about N550m for refreshments and N200m for sporting activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> It also reported that the agency budgeted N262.5 million for security votes and N17.8 billion for \u201cmiscellaneous\u201d expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But the agency said it only earmarked <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">N11.36 billion for administrative expenses \u2014 and not N17.8 billion as reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reacting to the report, the youth council argued that \u201cany discerning mind would see that the said budget estimate is a proposed expenditure that would eventually pass through the eagle eyes of the National Assembly for rigorous scrutiny.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cEven though the official response of the FIRS to that publication has put to rest all misconceptions and addressed the obvious political mischief intended by the vexatious publication, we feel inclined to add our voices to the issue if only to finally nail the coffin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The FIRS and Multichoice Nigeria Limited \u2014 owner of DStv and GOtv \u2014 are currently embroiled in legal tussles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has applauded the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for boosting tax revenue in the country.
