{"id":99780,"date":"2021-10-29T14:16:12","date_gmt":"2021-10-29T13:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=99780"},"modified":"2021-10-29T14:20:57","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T13:20:57","slug":"nafdac-dg-reveals-people-behind-influx-of-fake-substandard-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/29\/nafdac-dg-reveals-people-behind-influx-of-fake-substandard-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"NAFDAC DG reveals &#8216;people&#8217; behind influx of fake, substandard drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has stated that &#8220;cabals&#8221; at the Nigerian ports are behind the influx of fake and substandard drugs into the country.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Thursday by the director-general of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye\u00a0when she appeared before the house of representatives committee on healthcare services.<\/p>\n<p>According to Adeyeye,\u00a0the cabal was formed when the agency was removed from the ports between 2011 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us look at our porous borders, we are surrounded by six countries and there is no guard in terms of regulation of the border,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom 2011 to May 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/11\/nafdac-to-nigerians-stop-consuming-unapproved-us-infant-formulas\/\">NAFDAC<\/a> was removed from the ports. We are supposed to be controlling and regulating what is imported or exported; seven years and cabals were formed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot undo the cabals overnight and this is why it has been extremely challenging in the last three and a half years. The federal task force is domiciled in NAFDAC and we are putting a lot of monies on enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went straight into the heart of the problem which is China and India. Before, there were loopholes in terms of testing products that come into our country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have pegged that and decreased significantly the number of fake products coming into the country, over 95 percent of products we import are from China and India.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe read them the riot act and we have gotten so much success in terms of things coming in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, we still have a lot of work to do, a regulatory agency has to use tools, it is vehicles that we will use to run after drug smugglers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adeyeye said the agency needs more personnel at the borders to curb the importation of fake drugs into the country.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the committee, Tanko Sununu asked\u00a0NAFDAC to embark on nationwide market surveillance to tackle fake drugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen last did NAFDAC carry out mark surveillance nationwide\u2026 2012 is too long, NAFDAC has the right to walk into any shop, pick any product and subject it to study,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has stated that &#8220;cabals&#8221; at the Nigerian ports are behind the influx of fake and substandard drugs into the country.
