Lady divorces ‘illiterate husband’ who raised, sponsored her from primary school to university

Maria Tembo

A Zambian woman, Maria Tembo, has asked a local court for divorce from her husband of 20 years, after he educated her from primary school to the university level.

When asked by the court why she was divorcing her husband ‘Vincent’, Maria Tembo said she was no longer interested in marrying someone who was not educated, adding that her friends were laughing at her because the husband was illiterate.

Rather than issue the divorce, the court reprimanded and ordered Maria to pay her husband, Vincent Tembo, K10,000 (N364,626) for abandoning him after she had obtained a degree in teaching.

In his evidence, the husband lamented before the court how his wife, who now “speaks English like an American,” abandoned him because of the college degree she obtained at his expense.

The two tied the knot in 1997 and have two children together.
