Nigerian-American Singer, MrcyU Trends After Doing This To Wizkid’s Track, Other Songs (Video)

When it comes to music, there is no doubt that it is the gateway to the soul. Over the years we have seen thousands of talented singers rise up and deliver top notch songs. Speaking of upcoming artistes, there is one person who has taken the music world by storm with her incredible voice. Her name is Mercy but known by her stage name, Mrcyu.

Mercy was born in San Diego California to two Nigerian parents from Anambra State. She always had a natural pull toward music and believed she had a voice but wasn’t sure until one day, she decided to come out of her shell and upload a video on Facebook of herself singing in her room. The video went viral and close friends and family were shocked at her voice as she had kept it under wraps until then.

She sang covers and worked on her craft. She also wrote a song and shot a video “Barbie N Ken” and performed live at venues such as Catchone nightclub, House of Blues Hollywood, and the Viper Room Hollywood. She ended up getting invited to radio stations, red carpet interviews, online interviews and got her freestyle to Mayorkun’s “Mamma” played on radio and popular Lagos venues. She also performed live in Victoria Island and recorded her debut single “MRCY”.

Her style of music is a fusion of RnB, Afrobeat sounds and pop. The talented artiste is still basking in the success of her debut single, MRCY, which is a feel-good jam. She writes to beats and freestyle comes easy to her. She has a naturally beautiful sounding voice that goes with her looks.

There is something else about her. She does these videos which are her freestyles of songs by other artistes. It’s an idea she calls Car Chronicles because she records them with a phone while inside her car.

She works only with the beat of the song and then freestyles to it. She creates incredible mash-ups of trending songs. A mash-up is a creative work, usually in a form of a song, created by blending two or more pre-recorded songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the instrumental track of another.

Here are 7 videos of the ones she has done:

Wizkid’s ‘Fever’ and Burna Boy’s ‘On The Low’

Her first mash-up was a combination of Wizkid’s banging hit, ‘Fever’ and Burna Boy’s hit single, ‘On The Low’. She went in softly, adding her own spin to the lyrics then switched to Burna’s song, dropping her voice to a deep undertone that was sleek and smooth. Vocally, she had a booming voice and bags of character in her tone.

Kizz Daniel’s ‘Madu’ and ‘Laye’

In this second video, Mrcyu worked with two of Kizz Daniel’s songs. She started with ‘Madu’ beat, changing the lyrics to her own and halfway into it, switched perfectly into ‘Laye’ and back to ‘Madu’. One catchy line from this freestyle is ‘I’m going to use my success to scatter your brain for you, permit me”. She did a banging job on this one!

Mr Eazi’s ‘Dabebi’ and Teni’s ‘Case’

Of all the Car Chronicles, this one stands out. Her voice in it is clear and amazing. She started with Mr Eazi’s ‘Dabebi’ beat and worked her way smoothly into Teni’s ‘Case’. She even dabbled with a bit of rap in this mash-up. She had a sultry delivery and a real strong commitment to the song and performance throughout.

Wizkid’s ‘Fake Love’ and ‘Ojuelegba’

Wizkid will indeed be proud if he sees this. She delivered this one with so much zeal, mixing the singer’s hits in a well-crafted way, using both English and Igbo.

Fireboy’s ‘Jealous’ and Koredo Bello’s

You might want to stand up to dance to this one. Vocally, she had a great tone and really good control on the high notes. Starting and ending with ‘Jealous’, with Korede Bello’s song in the middle, the freestyle was a whole mood!

Beyonce’s ‘Yes’, Lauryn Hill’s ‘Doowop’ and Maleek Berry ‘Juice’

She picked a tough song, held the notes and sustained it with great power, tone and control. Working with three beats, she delivered this freestyle aptly, adding some rap to it. Too much juice, too much sauce!

Kizz Daniel’s Woju

This wasn’t a mash-up but she played really well with the beat, great energy emanating from her voice. She had fun with this one!

I think it is safe to say that Mrcyu has a unique talent worth exploring and taking to the next level. Kudos, girl!
