Many injured as LASU students faint in exam stampede

Many students of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, fainted and were injured on Monday due to stampede while rushing into the hall to write the GNS 102 examination at the main campus of the university.

All the affected students are in 100-level writing their last paper-which is the general course for all 100-level students for the 2018/2019 academic session second-semester examinations.

An eyewitness account said the incident happened at the new 500-seat capacity ICT centre of the institution and that the students were rushed to the school health centre and the nearby Igando General Hospital for medical attention.

According to report, the exam was scheduled for two days – Monday and Tuesday- between 8:00 am and 2:00 pm daily and in batches with the school allocated the only date without specific time for each student to write the exam meant for a large class.

When contacted, the institution’s spokesman, Mr Ademola Adekoya, confirmed the incident, saying all the students for Monday exam wanted to enter the exam hall almost at the same time and in the process stampeded with some fainting and few others injured.

While noting that except one student who is still receiving treatment at Igando General Hospital, all others without given specific number have been discharged as their cases according to him are minor.

He said that the management had shifted the exam to Wednesday and Thursday and still between the previous 8.am and 2:00 pm daily but now with each student to come strictly at their allotted time while cancelling all the exam already written before the incident on Monday.
