Two weeks after Lagos state government revealed it has not decided on Okada and tricycles, the state has announced the date it will implement the ban on Motorcycles (Okada) and tricycle (Keke) in major areas of the state.
The ban will affect 5 major LOCAL COUNCIL DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY, 11 Express ways, 41 BRIDGES and it will take effect from February 1.
This ban will affect all forms of commercial motorcyles including ORide, Gokada, Max Okada and other motorbike hailing services.
This ban will affect beyond the owners of motorbike hailing services and local Okada riders. Lagosians will feel the impact more, since bike riders have been one of the major solutions to evade traffic that is constant within the state. Also, Commercial Okada riding has been a major fall back job for a lot of youths who are unemployed within the state.
However, the commissioner for information and strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, revealed that the decision was made after a review of casualties. Omotoso disclosed this at a press conference in Lagos on Monday.
He said;
“After a robust assessment of the debate on what has been widely referred to as the motorcycle (okada) and tricycle (Keke Marwa) Menace, the Lagos State Government and the State Security Council have decided that the security and safety of lives of Lagosians are paramount,”
“The figures are scary. From 2016 to 2019, there were over 10,000 accidents recorded at the General Hospitals alone. This number excludes unreported cases and those recorded by other hospitals. The total number of deaths from reported cases is over 600 as at date.”
