Osun group decries increase in rape cases, charges government to be more responsive

Following the sudden increase of rape cases in the country which has led to dehumanizing the girl child, sending some victims to early grave, creating tension and unnecessary panic, the Osun Online Media Practitioners’ Association (OOMPA) has decried and condemned the sad act, charging the government to be more responsive.

While decrying the incessant rape acts, the group described the vice as pandemic spreading faster than the ongoing Coronavirus in the country and added that it is now seen as a norm and virtue to be embraced by predators in the society.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the association, Jare Tiamiyu and its publicity secretary, Comrade Tunde Olorungbotemi which was made available to WITHIN NIGERIA at the Secretariat of the association in Osogbo, the group insisted rape is evil and illicit which is borne out of a selfish mind towards the other party, leaving them in a state of trauma, be it a male or female.

The chairman, Tiamiyu appealed to parents, guardians to protect their children jealously and see to their welfare and proper home training.

While advising parents to teach their children the basic knowledge they ought to know about sexuality and sex education, Tiamiyu stressed the role of stakeholders in addressing the menace, adding that statistics indicted that at least two million Nigerian girls experience sexual abuse.

The chairman said;

“I, therefore, call on our law enforcement agencies and the judiciary to be more responsive in their prosecutions, ruling and passing judgment on perpetrators of any human being found guilty of Rape to save and secure the human right of our girl child in Nigeria. He said.

“All hospital owners and government parastatals should provide an emergency section to serve as first aid response to the victims of rape to serve their life.”
