Nigeria confirms 556 new COVID-19 cases, total now 36,663

Nigeria records 626 new COVID-19 cases, total now 27,110

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 556 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, bringing the total number to 36,663.

The NCDC made the announcement on Sunday night via its Twitter handle.

“On the 19th of July 2020, 556 new confirmed cases and 11 deaths were recorded in Nigeria. Till date, 36663 cases have been confirmed, 15105 cases have been discharged and 789 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The 556 new cases are reported from 18 states; Edo-104, Lagos-97, FCT-70, Benue-66, Oyo-61, Kaduna-38, Plateau-28, Osun-19, Akwa Ibom-14, Rivers-13, Katsina-13, Ondo-13, Ogun-6, Kano-5, Nasarawa-4, Gombe-2, Ekiti-2, Borno-1,” the NCDC said.

WITHIN NIGERIA had earlier reported that the Minister of foreign affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama tested positive for coronavirus.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has wished Onyeama, quick recovery as he goes into isolation after testing positive for Covid-19 on Sunday.

A statement issued by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media & Publicity) in Abuja on Sunday said President Buhari described the minister as a strong pillar of his administration, commending him for tirelessly working to stem the spread of coronavirus in the country as a member of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, and ensuring the safety of Nigerians abroad.

“The country is eternally grateful to Geoffrey Onyeama for his diligence in attracting international support for Nigeria to defeat the coronavirus pandemic and boost the economy. I wish him speedy recovery,” the statement quoted the President as saying.
