Tribunal annuls Bayelsa governorship election

Senator Duoye Diri

The election of Bayelsa State, Duoye Diri has been annulled by the Bayelsa state governorship election tribunal sitting in Abuja.

Recall that the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP) had asked the tribunal to cancel the election because it was not included in the election which held on November 16, 2019.

The judge, Yunusa Musa upheld the prayer ot ANDP and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh election in Bayelsa within 90 days while delivering judgment on Monday.

A candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Diri was sworn in as governor after the supreme court sacked David Lyon as governor-elect 24 hours before his inauguration.

The apex court based its rulings on the premise that Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo, running mate of the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), presented forged certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a related story, WITHIN NIGERIA reported that the Bayelsa Governorship Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Saturday affirmed the election of Duoye Diri as Bayelsa State Governor.

The three-man panel took the decision today a month after the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal filed by a former aspirant of the Bayelsa governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party, Timi Alaibe, challenging the candidacy of Senator Diri in the November 2019 election.
