Bauchi lawmaker spends N2.8m on canoes for his constituency

The lawmaker representing Kirfi constituency in the Bauchi house of assembly, Abdulkadir Dewu has purchased canoes worth N2.8 million for his constituency.

This was revealed on Friday by the state lawmaker.

Dewu added that four canoes were purchased to ease the problem of transportation across Kirfi river.

“I spent the sum of N2.8 million to purchase the canoes from Numan local government area, Adamawa state,” he was quoted to have said.

“Each of the three medium-sized canoes cost N780,000, while the fourth one with a higher capacity costs N480,000 and they are being manned by indigent operators who are competent swimmers so as to forestall any mishaps.”

The development comes months after a boat accident in Kirfi that resulted in the death of close to 40 residents.

Recall that a canoe had capsized on Kirfi river in October 2019, killing 38 persons out of the 49 people on board.

The Bauchi state house of assembly had suspended plenary for one day in honour of those who lost their lives during the incident.

Following the accident, Dewu had also appealed to the federal government to construct a bridge across the river.

Meanwhile, in July 2020, the lawmaker had donated a hectare of land to Guyama village in his constituency for the expansion of their graveyard.
