The Oyo State police have kept the public in the dark regarding their investigations following the death of two Ibadan poly students, despite informing Within Nigeria in a previous report that investigations are ongoing and information concerning the case would be revealed soon.
Recall that the students identified as Oromidayo Daniel, an ND II student of Civil Engineering, and Aramide Adeleke, from Business Administration, died in May after allegedly having marathon sex with each other. Both students were said to be under the influence of some sex-enhancing drugs. The news of their death was made public on the 17th of May.
However, Within Nigeria who monitored the whole incident discovered that the allegations of sex romp were unfounded., This was backed up by a source at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, where one of the deceased students was taken to.
An official of the UCH said: ” UCH never issued any report and it is the polytechnic’s authority that should have spoken. UCH cannot be a party to this case because just like any patient would come to UCH, we never carried out an autopsy on her, so we wouldn’t know if she died of any complications. But I think it is a criminal case so the police are in a better position to throw light. She was our patient and she died.”
“We do not have the report that it was sex drugs that killed them. It was a speculation from the public, but UCH cannot confirm this. Beyond that, there were claims that it was fumes from a generator that killed them.”
In a bid to know the outcome of the police investigation, Within Nigeria still spoke to The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, who still maintained that investigations were ongoing.
Osifeso said, “You will be updated accordingly”. When asked about the timeframe, he still reiterated his previous statement.
NANS reacts
The national leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) told Within Nigeria that the association has been expecting the outcome of the investigations carried out by the Oyo state police.
The Executive Director, Campus Intervention, Oladimeji Uthman, said the association has met with the command PPRO and was informed the investigation is still ongoing.
“The student body has also been expecting the outcome of the investigations by the Oyo State Command of the Nigerian Police Force to unravel the death of our members at The Polytechnic Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State. The last time the leadership met with the command PPRO, I was informed the investigation is still ongoing.”
“I use this medium to call the attention of the command that Nigerian Students are awaiting the report of the investigation that led to the death of our students in the polytechnic,” he said
Lawyer calls for speedy investigation
A Human rights Lawyer, Festus Ogun, berated the Oyo state police for not keeping the public updated on its ongoing investigation. He said that it is a matter of concern that investigations take too long especially as the public and parents are awaiting the outcome of their findings.
‘I honestly believe that the police authorities should be more committed and transparent to the investigation process, the whole circumstances surrounding and leading to the death of the two young people must be thoroughly investigated. Now it is deeply concerning that the investigation is taking too long.
“For over a month, the public is not updated and at the end of the day, it seems to me that when investigations take too long like this, and no one is saying anything, it becomes abandoned and forgotten, and that is why we are calling on the police authority. We are charging them to ensure that investigations are concluded as soon as practicable so that it won’t be a case of the public and family waiting without getting a sincere answer to the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate demise of these young people,” he said.
