For the Abia State University, Uturu Abia State, the name Peters Chioma rings a loud bell.
The 22-year old first class graduate of the University believes that diligent, determination and perseverance are key to success.
She graduated with first class degree from the varsity, making CGPA of 4.69 in the department of Linguistics and Communication. She graduated in the 2021/2022 session.
Chioma Peters is currently her compulsory one years National Youths Service Corps program at Akwaibom state.
WITHIN NIGERIA reporter, Christopher Nnadi had an Exclusive chat with her where she explained how journey to this great academic feat.
Excerpts
In the beginning
I’m Peters Miracle Chioma. I hail from Ihiagwa,Umuchima in Imo State. I’m 22 years old, single. I was born on the 20th of March, 2001. I’m the first and only girl in the family of three children. I love education and love to impact knowledge.
Why I decided to study
I decided to study linguistics and communication studies because of my love for language and communication.
The tough road to my success
It was indeed a tough one. It was not a rosy one. I won’t lie; it wasn’t an easy road. I was able to make it to first class level because of God, coupled with high level of diligence, persistence and determination. I was determined and intentional about everything I do.
What was motivated me
My motivation was me. I wanted to make myself proud. Again, I was motivated by the fact that I will remain eternally happy if I make it to the top as a first class graduate of Abia State University, Uturu which by God’s grace, I was able to achieve.
How I felt when I discovered I have got first class
I actually wasn’t surprised because I was obviously convinced beyond all reasonable doubts going by my previous semesters’ results. However, I was overwhelmed with joy. This is because, I was able to achieve my dream.
My most challenging moment
My darkest moment was ill health and financial struggle. At one time or the other, I became sick when our exam was very much close. I thought I would fail some of my courses, but to the glory of God, I did fail any.
Again, I had a lot of challenge such as battling with peer pressure ( I never fell a victim), mental, social, emotional and psychological challenges.
What I mean by Psychological challenge
My dad was sick one time and it didn’t go down well with me. It affected my thinking faculty because I was just scared that I wasn’t going to finish up my studies. My mom too had health issues and stuff like that but I just didn’t let all of that weigh me down. I looked beyond my limits. Physiologically also, I had eye issues that lasted for 2 years. I later discovered that it was caused by too much reading. I read too much. I used dark lights. I also read in discomforting places.
However, my brightest moment was seeing myself scoring A’s in my results.
Stereotype of only daughter syndrome
Let me start by saying that actually my parents sponsored my education and I know what we passed through to see me get to this level now.
In fact, I sold zobo drinks ,cakes clothing materials to survive as a student while in school.
I was doing it mostly when school closed for break. I tell you, it was not all that easy for me, but thank I was able to make it.
By and large, I know a lot of people say that first class graduates are usually arrogant and pompous but I can say with all sincerity of purpose that I am an exception.
I think it’s not the same for everyone. I cope with everything. I’m not arrogant and I don’t intend to be one because nothing good comes out of it.
How hard I was studying in school
I studied really hard when I was school. I spent more than twelve hours everyday reading and studying my books. I didn’t have time for frivolities.
My involvement in social/Religious activities
I was a member of Jesus Disciples Fellowship in my school. I was practically involved in everything.
Actually, I belonged to many social groups. I was a one time Assistant Secretary and Vice president of my department. I was also a member of Students Union Government, SUG my school. I was never found wanting in both social and Religious groups.
My next plan in life
After my youths service, I plan to further my education. I will go for my Masters degree program and from there, I will start life.
My advice to the youths
My advice to the youths especially students is to work hard. I urge them to be better not just for anyone but for themselves. I strongly believe that there is dignity ,pride and respect in the pursuit of success. In summary, I want to let them know that hard-work pays.
