EXPLAINER: How to Avoid and Treat Snake Bites

It was a heartbreaking Saturday when Ifunanya Nwangene, an Abuja-based singer, died from a snake bite.

Nwangene, a soprano vocalist with the Amemuso Choir, died at the Federal Medical Centre in Abuja after efforts to save her life reportedly failed due to a lack of adequate venom.

On Sunday afternoon, the Amemuso Choir released a message on their Facebook page, confirming her tragic death.

The statement, signed by the choir’s music director, Sam Ezugwu, announced the circumstances of her passing.

“We regret to announce the sudden demise of our beloved soprano, Ifunanya Nwangene, who passed away yesterday, 31st January 2026, at the Federal Medical Centre due to a snake bite,” the statement read.

The choir described her as a fast-rising talent within Abuja’s music community, noting that her death came at a critical stage of her artistic journey.

“A rising star, Ifunanya was on the cusp of sharing her incredible talent with the world.“

Her voice and spirit will be deeply missed,” the statement added, while indicating that burial arrangements would be communicated later.

The death of Ifunanya Nwangene has sparked outrage in the country, with several Nigerians lamenting the lack of anti-venom vaccines in our hospitals, including tertiary health institutions.

According to the Toxicological Society of Nigeria, the country records approximately 1,900 snake bite-related deaths per year, with Gombe State reporting 54 deaths in 2025.

However, numerous health professionals, including doctors, have recommended Nigerians to prioritize preventive measures. They also encouraged Nigerians to decrease the number of snakes near their homes.
