Dauda Lawal: Meet “Zamfara Governor” Who Dumped PDP for APC

Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).


This was disclosed on Monday, March 9, 2026 by his deputy, Mani Mummuni, who cited internal crisis and legal disputes within the PDP as the reason for the move.

The defection comes after weeks of speculation and follows a recent Appeal Court ruling that dismissed an appeal by the PDP, effectively ending Lawal’s stay in the party.

He was born on September 2, 1965, in Gusau, Zamfara State

He attended the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he obtained a degree in political science

He also obtained a Masters Degree in Political Science from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

He later attended the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto where he graduated with a PhD in Business Administration

He started as a political education officer with the Agency for Mass Mobilization for Social and Economic Reliance Nigeria in 1989

He then joined Westex Nigeria Limited as an assistant general manager

In 1994, he was appointed as an assistant consular officer (immigration) and later became chief protocol officer at the Embassy of Nigeria, Washington, D.C., US

Lawal joined First Bank of Nigeria Plc in 2003 as a relationship manager and rose through the ranks to become executive director, Public Sector North, in 2012.

He had a distinguished career in banking, serving as Executive Director, Public Sector North, at First Bank of Nigeria Plc

He contested for governor in 2018 under the APC but lost to Mukhtar Shehu Idris

He was later elected as governor under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, defeating incumbent Bello Matawalle
