2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Stuns with New V8 Power, Luxury Tech and Bold Redesign

GMC Sierra 1500

GMC pulled the covers off the 2027 Sierra 1500 on June 25, 2026, and the full-size truck segment just got a lot more interesting.

This is the first ground-up redesign of the Sierra 1500 in nearly a decade. The fourth-generation truck launched in 2019, got a refresh in 2022, and has now handed the baton to an all-new fifth generation that carries two brand-new V8 engines, a cabin drowning in digital screens, and a trim lineup that’s been reshuffled from top to bottom.

The new Sierra hits dealers before the end of 2026. Pricing has not been announced, but with the 2026 model starting around $41,095, expect the 2027 to open a bit higher.

Two Brand-New V8 Engines Are the Big Story

The engine news is what most Sierra fans have been waiting years for. GMC is introducing sixth-generation Small Block V8s in two displacements: a 5.7-liter and a 6.6-liter.

The 5.7L takes over from the old 5.3L (which made 355 horsepower), and the 6.6L replaces the 6.2L that topped out at 420 hp. GMC hasn’t published output figures yet, those are coming closer to the on-sale date, but Motor1 noted the larger engine could land in the mid- to high-400-horsepower range. Both engines incorporate updated combustion, cooling, and control systems alongside a new fuel injection setup designed to improve power delivery across everything from daily commuting to rock crawling.

Beyond the new V8s, the lineup also carries over an enhanced TurboMax 2.7-liter four-cylinder, now with what GMC calls best-in-class standard torque, and the class-exclusive Duramax 3.0-liter turbodiesel. No competitor in the half-ton segment offers a diesel option. Every single engine pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The 6.6L V8 is standard on the Denali Ultimate. GMC says it’s the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 available in the class.

The Interior Gets a Complete Overhaul

If the engines are the main event, the cabin is a close second. The Denali Ultimate packs over 60 inches of combined digital displays, more than any competitor, and the way GMC arranged them is genuinely different from anything else in the segment.

The centerpiece is a 16.3-inch articulating infotainment touchscreen. It physically extends out from the dashboard for easier reach and, when open, reveals a storage cubby behind it, a small but clever piece of packaging. There’s also a 12.2-inch driver information center directly in the driver’s sightline, a 15-inch full-color head-up display, an 8.5-inch rear camera mirror, and an available 11.5-inch front passenger screen with a folding cover that can shield roughly two-thirds of the display, useful if the driver finds it distracting.

The MultiPro center console makes its Sierra debut for 2027. It converts into a workspace, continuing GMC’s pattern of treating the truck cab as a mobile office.

Material quality has been elevated across the board. The Denali Ultimate uses open-pore forged birch wood trim, the AT4X gets real carbon fiber, and a 16-speaker Bose Premium Series audio system, with speakers built into the front-seat headrests, is available on top trims. A panoramic sunroof is also on the options list.

Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver assistance technology, expands significantly for 2027. On the Denali Ultimate, it comes standard with a three-year subscription and supports trailering, meaning hands-free driving even while towing. It works on more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada, and includes Automatic Lane Change and Turn Signal Initiated Lane Change. No competitor currently offers anything comparable while towing.

New Look, From Every Angle

The 2027 Sierra’s exterior design drew inspiration from the Sierra EV. The front grille is more vertical than before, the headlights have evolved in signature GMC fashion, and each trim gets its own distinct front-end treatment rather than a one-size-fits-all face.

Available features include headlight and taillight welcome/farewell animations, GMC’s signature WOM (Wall of Metal) lighting, and a quad-outlet exhaust. Top trims ride on 22-inch wheels. Three cab configurations and multiple bed lengths carry over, with rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive both available.

Cars.com’s reviewers described the styling as more upscale, cleaner lines, a sharper grille, an even higher hood line, though they noted it’s more of an evolution than a reinvention. The Sierra remains instantly recognizable. That’s probably intentional.

The AT4X: Most Capable Sierra Off-Roader Ever Built

GMC is calling the 2027 AT4X the most off-road capable Sierra it has ever produced, and the hardware list backs that up.

Standard equipment includes 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires (a Sierra first), front and rear electronic locking differentials, Multimatic Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve dampers now upgraded with Jounce Control Dampers for better high-speed off-road composure, and a factory 2-inch suspension lift. The AT4X also gets an exclusive hood design and a restyled front fascia that makes it look meaner than the standard AT4.

Inside, the AT4X cabin goes with an exclusive Timber Mahogany colorway. Front seats have enhanced bolstering, there’s a flat-bottom sport steering wheel, a standard panoramic sunroof, stainless steel speaker grilles, and unique upholstery with quilting, embroidery, and perforation patterns throughout.

For buyers who want even more, the American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) Edition package returns for 2027.

Trim Lineup: Two Old Names Are Gone

The 2027 Sierra 1500 launches with six trims: Pro, Elevation, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate. The SLE and SLT, two names that have been part of the Sierra’s identity for years, do not return for the new generation.

The Pro handles fleet and work-truck duty. The Elevation slots in as the style-focused mid-range option. AT4 and AT4X cover off-road territory. Denali and Denali Ultimate handle the luxury end.

What It’s Up Against

The 2027 Sierra 1500 competes directly with the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (which shares the same updated GM platform), the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. GMC has historically differentiated the Sierra through more premium trim content and technology rather than trying to out-muscle the F-150, and that strategy appears to continue here.

The Ram 1500 has held the benchmark for interior luxury in the segment for several years. Whether the new Sierra’s articulating screens, forged birch, and Bose headrest speakers can challenge that reputation is a question that won’t be answered until buyers get inside both trucks.

When Can You Buy One?

The first 2027 Sierra 1500 models are expected at GMC dealerships before the end of 2026. Pricing will be confirmed closer to the on-sale date. Production takes place across GM’s U.S. and Mexico plants, with the new sixth-generation Small Block V8 engines built at GM’s Flint Engine Plant, which received a $579 million investment to support the new powertrains.

GMC’s global vice president for Buick and GMC, Michael MacPhee, put it simply at the reveal: “Denali Ultimate and AT4X solidify Sierra as the most powerful, most advanced and most luxurious trucks we’ve ever built. The next-generation Sierra is the truck all others will be measured against.”

Bold claim. The full-size truck segment will find out soon enough.
