5 celebrities whose surprise wedding announcements stunned fans in July

Surprise wedding announcement in July 2026

For many celebrities, weddings are no longer months-long public events filled with endless countdowns and constant social media updates. Instead, more stars are choosing to keep their relationships private until the last minute, leaving fans with little or no clue that wedding bells are about to ring.

July 2026 perfectly reflected that shift. Within a few weeks, several Nigerian celebrities either announced their marriages, unveiled wedding plans or shared surprise relationship milestones that quickly went viral. While some had already quietly exchanged vows before going public, others invited fans into the next chapter of their love story. One announcement even turned out to be an elaborate publicity stunt.

Here are five celebrity love stories that left many fans stunned throughout July.

1. Soso Soberekon kept his romance private before unveiling a lavish wedding

Soso Soberekon & Princess Ebiere

Perhaps the biggest surprise came from music executive and White Lion Global CEO Soso Soberekon, who managed to keep his relationship with Princess Ebiere almost entirely away from public attention before revealing they were set to marry.

Unknown to many fans, the couple had already held a quiet civil wedding in London in January 2026. While the ceremony remained private, their traditional wedding journey reached Nigeria in July.

On Wednesday, July 22, Soso arrived in Benikrukru Community in the Gbaramatu Kingdom of Delta State to complete the traditional marriage rites and pay his bride price. On the same day, he surprised followers by posting a heartwarming pre-wedding video on Instagram showing himself and Princess Ebiere dressed in regal traditional attire adorned with coral beads.

Alongside the video, he simply wrote, I HAVE BEEN TAKEN, while introducing the official wedding hashtag #SoBeau2026. The announcement came only three days before the grand celebration, giving fans little time to prepare for what would become one of the biggest celebrity weddings of the year.

On Saturday, July 25, the couple hosted a star-studded traditional wedding and reception in Warri, Delta State. The ceremony reflected Soso’s reputation for luxury. To transport his celebrity guests from Lagos to Warri, he reportedly chartered several private jets. One separate jet was said to have been used exclusively to fly bespoke wedding souvenirs into Osubi Airport before guests were chauffeured through Warri in luxury vehicles.

The bride and groom appeared in royal traditional outfits decorated with heavy coral beads, while the groom’s entourage wore elegant white-and-gold lace outfits with traditional wrappers, bowler hats and walking sticks.

The celebration attracted some of Nigeria’s biggest entertainment and business personalities. Legendary singers 2Baba and Wande Coal thrilled guests with live performances, while Timi Dakolo serenaded the couple with his popular wedding anthem, Iyawo Mi, during their first dance. Other performances came from Zlatan Ibile, Teni and Duncan Mighty.

Among the guests were Obi Cubana, Cubana Chief Priest, E-Money, Kcee, Zlatan, Sabinus, Ini Edo, Rita Dominic, Iyabo Ojo, Toke Makinwa and former Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick.

Even after the wedding ended, conversations continued online as many netizens noticed the absence of Davido and his wife, Chioma, leading to widespread speculation about the singer’s relationship with Soso. While no official explanation was given, the discussion became one of the biggest talking points after the ceremony.

2. Peller and Jarvis turned their online love story into a real-life marriage

Peller & Jarvis

Popular digital creators Habeeb Hamzat, better known as Peller, and Amadou Elizabeth Aminata, popularly called Jarvis, transformed what began as successful livestream collaborations into one of Nigeria’s most talked-about celebrity relationships. Their journey toward marriage unfolded over several weeks.

It began on June 3, 2026, when Peller proposed during a romantic beach getaway at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, Ghana. The proposal also marked a reconciliation after the couple had briefly fallen out over Jarvis’ concerns that Peller often shared too much of their private life online.

Just weeks later, on June 21, Peller travelled with his family to Benin City, Edo State, where he formally met Jarvis’ parents, fulfilled the traditional marriage requirements and paid her bride price. The couple later released stunning photographs dressed in rich Edo traditional attire.

Their relationship reached another milestone on Wednesday, July 29, when they legally became husband and wife at the Federal Marriage Registry in Ikoyi, Lagos. For the ceremony, Peller wore a cream-coloured suit paired with a light blue tie, while Jarvis appeared in a white floral tweed mini dress with a matching bolero jacket, white pumps and a bouquet of fresh white flowers.

One of the day’s most memorable moments came when the marriage registrar explained that statutory marriage carries legal responsibilities and that bigamy attracts a minimum five-year prison sentence without the option of a fine.

Peller immediately paused the proceedings and jokingly asked, “Five years in prison for marriage? I don’t know how prison entered this love story!”

The humorous exchange quickly went viral across social media. The celebrations continues on Saturday, August 1, with the couple’s traditional wedding in Lagos. Staying true to their identity as digital creators, they announced that the ceremony would be streamed live on their Twitch and YouTube instead of relying on traditional television coverage.

While many celebrated the couple’s love story, others questioned whether the union represented genuine romance or a powerful business partnership built around the creator economy.

3. MC Lively surprised fans with an engagement announcement

MC Lively & Dumebi James

Unlike others on this list, comedian and lawyer Michael Sani Amanesi, popularly known as MC Lively, did not announce a wedding in July. Instead, he surprised fans by revealing that he was engaged.

On Wednesday, July 22, the 33-year-old unveiled his fiancée, Dumebi James, through an elegant collection of pre-wedding photographs posted across his social media pages. Sharing the photos, he wrote:

“A King and His Queen!! 💍❤️ #ML26.”

The announcement immediately attracted attention because MC Lively had kept his relationship largely out of the public eye.

Dumebi James is from Nigeria’s South-East, while MC Lively hails from Agenebode in Edo State. Celebrating their cross-cultural relationship, he added another heartfelt message:

“From the South to the East, our love remains worthy of a big feast.”

Their pre-wedding collection featured two different concepts. Both outfits showcased the couple in regal traditional attire. The photos were so convincing that rumours quickly spread on Thursday, July 23, claiming the comedian had secretly married.

MC Lively later clarified that he had not yet tied the knot. He explained that some of the viral images being circulated online came from a separate professional modelling shoot and assured fans that his actual wedding with Dumebi was still ahead. Although the date and venue remain undisclosed, the hashtag #ML26 suggests the ceremony will take place before the end of the year.

4. GehGeh’s viral wedding turned out to be a publicity stunt

GehGeh & Mary

Relationship commentator and content creator Emmanuel Obruste, popularly known as GehGeh, generated one of July’s biggest online debates after videos appeared to show him getting married.

On Saturday, July 25, clips flooded social media showing GehGeh dressed in burgundy traditional attire alongside a bride identified as Mary during what looked like a traditional wedding in Minna, Niger State.

The videos captured the pair cutting a wedding cake, dancing together and taking part in several wedding traditions.

The internet reacted almost immediately. GehGeh had built his public image by repeatedly arguing that marriage was a financial burden for men. He often advised men to remain single and instead have children outside marriage.

Because of those long-held views, many netizens accused him of contradicting himself. Others jokingly declared that his famous “GehGeh University” had finally closed.

As the backlash intensified, GehGeh initially joked that artificial intelligence had edited him into a wedding. However, in an interview published on August 1, 2026, he admitted to something else.

According to him, the wedding was never real. Instead, it was a carefully planned social experiment and publicity campaign designed to promote an upcoming movie project.

Explaining the idea behind the stunt, he said:

“It was all content for visibility… The goal was to get people talking, and it worked.”

5. Zlatan Ibile quietly married before announcing a bigger celebration

Davita & Zlatan Ibile

Street-pop star Temidayo Omoniyi, better known as Zlatan Ibile, also surprised fans in late July when he announced plans for his traditional and white wedding with longtime partner Davita Lamai.

What made the announcement even more surprising was the revelation that the couple had already quietly held a private civil wedding in May 2026 without attracting public attention. The announcement itself was anything but ordinary.

After attending Soso Soberekon’s wedding in Warri, Zlatan, Davita and several celebrities boarded a private jet back to Lagos. During the flight, singer Teni excitedly rang a bell and announced that Zlatan and his “wonderful wife” would be the next couple getting married.

Davita then stood beside Zlatan and formally invited fellow passengers, including Toke Makinwa, Ini Edo and Iyabo Ojo, to their upcoming celebration.

The video, recorded during the trip, surfaced online on Monday, July 27, before being widely shared by blogs and entertainment platforms the following day.

Although reports have linked the wedding to a possible October date, Zlatan and Davita have deliberately kept the official date and venue private.

The announcement marked a new chapter for the couple, who have been together for years and are parents to two children, Shiloh and Benaiah. After years of keeping much of their relationship away from public attention, the couple officially invited fans to join the countdown to their wedding celebration.
