The death of Nollywood actress Temitope “Tope” Osoba has raised questions that go far beyond the announcement of her passing.
Osoba, a popular Yoruba actress and producer, died on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the age of 40. Her death came about two years after she publicly opened up about her battle with breast cancer, a difficult period that involved treatment, surgery, fundraising and a long recovery.
Because of her medical history, reports quickly began linking her death to cancer-related complications. But her family rejected those reports, describing accounts about the circumstances of her death as false, speculative and unauthorised.
Since then, several disturbing claims have surfaced online. There have been rumours that she was poisoned. There have been allegations of maltreatment in the home she shared with her fiancé, Prophet Itunu Onadeko. There have also been allegations of sexual assault, drug use, money disputes and a reported N50 million fraud.
Then came an account of Osoba allegedly jumping out of a “korope” after claiming that people inside the vehicle were taking her somewhere to kill her.
There was also a reported police-station incident, a distress call, alleged messages and voice notes, and eventually a claim from her fiancé that he learnt around midnight that Osoba had died at a police station in Ikorodu.
Onadeko, however, has rejected virtually all the allegations against him. He also insists that cancer was not responsible for Osoba’s death.
With different accounts now circulating, what exactly happened during the actress’ final days?
Here is what has emerged from the various accounts, interviews, statements and rumours surrounding her death.
The cancer battle that shaped the story after her death
Long before her death, Osoba had publicly spoken about her battle with breast cancer. She discovered a lump during a self-examination in late 2023 and was subsequently diagnosed with breast cancer. Her treatment included surgery, and she later spoke about how the experience changed her life.
The actress also needed money for corrective treatment, leading to fundraising efforts involving people within and outside Nollywood. Actress Foluke Daramola was among those who spearheaded efforts to raise money for her treatment, while Osoba also received support from other individuals.
Osoba underwent surgery in November 2024 and later began to recover.
By 2025, she was speaking publicly about her return to life and the entertainment industry after the difficult experience. She described the period as a journey of healing, growth and empowerment.
She had also spoken about being warned not to get pregnant for five years because of her treatment.
Her previous cancer battle therefore became an obvious point of reference when news of her sudden death broke on August 5, 2026. Some early reports and social media posts linked her death to cancer-related complications. But that explanation was quickly challenged.
Her family rejected the reports
Following the reports surrounding Osoba’s death, her family issued a statement through her official social media page. The family said it was saddened by the spread of what it described as false and unverified reports concerning the actress’ passing.
They urged members of the public and the media to allow the family to mourn and to rely only on information authorised by them. The statement described several reports circulating on social media and blogs as “false, speculative, and entirely unauthorized.”
That statement became important because it meant the cause and circumstances of Osoba’s death could not simply be attributed to her previous cancer battle.
The question of what killed her remained open.
Then the rumours became more disturbing
As questions about her death continued, several allegations began circulating online. Some claimed that Osoba had been maltreated before her death. Others alleged that she was poisoned.
There were also allegations that she had been abused in the home of her fiancé, Prophet Itunu Onadeko, including a particularly disturbing claim that urine and faeces had been poured on her body as punishment over an alleged incident involving biscuits.
Another allegation claimed that Osoba had been raped in church and that the alleged act had been recorded.
There were also claims about money raised for her cancer treatment, with some people alleging that as much as N30 million had been donated and questioning what happened to the money.
Separately, an alleged N50 million dispute involving Osoba and some people around her who reportedly duped her also emerged.
Several of the people accused or mentioned have since denied the claims.
Her fiancé says cancer did not kill her
Prophet Itunu Onadeko, Osoba’s fiancé and the Shepherd-in-charge of CCC Onibuore Cathedral in the Bogije area of Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, addressed many of the allegations during an interview with Celestial Reality Check, the Media Investigative Unit of the Celestial Church of Christ.
The interview was published amid the growing controversy surrounding the actress’ death. Onadeko acknowledged that Osoba had battled cancer and that he had supported her before her surgery. But he insisted that the disease was not responsible for her death.
He recalled how he first met her in connection with prayers for her health.
“When I first met her, after I did a redemption (irapada) prayer for her, she told me she wants to do a surgery on cancer. I prayed for her. In fact the day, she planned for her surgery, she did a skit with Boda Wasiu and then we moved to Evacare Hospital.”
How Osoba and Onadeko met
Onadeko also explained how his relationship with Osoba began. According to him, Osoba was introduced to him by her younger sister, who told him that the actress wanted him to pray for her.
He said he already knew Osoba as an actress and particularly liked her work in Yoruba-language Nollywood films.
“It was her younger sister that told me that her elder sister, Temitope, wanted me to pray for her. I told her sister that Temitope Osoba is the only actress I like in Yoruba Nollywood movies.
“So I told her sister that although I’ve seen her before, I didn’t know that she was staying around. Upon meeting me and complaining about her problems, I prayed for her.
“So after the third day of completing her redemption (irapada) work, she came back and we were already friends then.”
According to the prophet, the relationship later became romantic after Osoba expressed an interest in him.
“One night when she came, she saw me buying food outside and asked if I don’t have a wife. I told her. And she joked that she liked me.”
He said they subsequently developed feelings for each other.
“We started talking and developed feelings for ourselves and eventually started dating.”
Onadeko said he was a divorcee and that although he and Osoba were engaged, they were not legally married.
“Tope was my fiancee. We were not legally married but her aunty knew about our relationship. We have been dating for about two years now… I was once married but separated.”
The allegation involving her husband’s siblings
Another video that surfaced after Osoba’s death has also drawn attention. In the video, reportedly sent to Prophetess Kehinde while Osoba was alive, the actress complained about her husband’s siblings and what she described as their treatment of her. She said:
“What is my offence to my husband’s siblings. They said I am the one causing issues between them and their brother. I have only spent two years in this house. They said I am marking a territory just because I wanted to cook for my husband.
“When they started their trouble, they were complaining that I was selling Sutana and Water. I am using this business to support my husband. I am fed up and I don’t want to leave my husband because that is what they want.”
The video has resulted in claims by netizens that it is evidence of problems in her relationship and home life.
The allegation that she was maltreated
One of the most disturbing rumours surrounding Osoba’s death was that she had been maltreated in the home where she was living. Tope Osoba’s video seemed to also buttress it.
There were online claims that she had been bullied by Onadeko and his younger siblings. One particularly disturbing allegation claimed that urine and faeces were poured on her body as punishment after an incident. Onadeko strongly denied the allegation.
He said they had never been in a situation where she was forced to surrender her money or subjected to such treatment.
“Some people said my siblings poured urine and poo on her, does that even make sense? Look at this house, we don’t use latrine here, how would a sane person go and take poo from the toilet?…
Tope was not a calm person like that. If you like trouble, she is a troublesome person. I also don’t know anything about the N50million people are talking about. We were giving each other money when we were living together.
“She bought gold for me and herself. She eventually sold it and we used it to settle some bills. I never forced her to give me her money. I have never bullied her neither did I beat her.”
He also disputed claims that they had rented a home together. According to him, Osoba was living in her uncle’s house, prior moving into his home. He continued:
“We never rented an apartment, the house she was living is her uncle’s house and she said he asked her to pay stipend to him for survival and not the exact rent. After the surgery, she gave her uncle N1m. When he insisted that he gave her something when he wanted to travel out, she blocked him.”
The N30 million cancer donation allegation
Another rumour that gained attention concerned the money raised for Osoba’s cancer treatment.
There were claims that about N30 million had been donated to her and allegations that Onadeko had access to the money or diverted it to church construction. He denied both claims.
“Who has an evidence that the money she got for her surgery is N30m? It wasn’t my account they sent the money to, it was hers. And I didn’t use the money to build church as rumoured. What I know is that people gave her money including Mike Adenuga who offered her a cheque. I never had access to her money.
“I met Tope like two years ago and the church has been there since 20 years ago. The church is complete before she even joined us. It has been roofed and painted.”
Onadeko repeated the denial during the same interview, insisting that the money donated to Osoba was paid into her own account.
“To everyone saying I collected the N30million that was donated to her when she had cancer, they should bring the evidence that N30million was donated. All the money donated to her including the cheque that was given by Mike Adenuga was paid into her account and I don’t have access to it. I never used her money to build my church.”
The N50 million and property claims
Another money-related claim surfaced in the account of Osoba’s final hours.
An eyewitness said that when Osoba was taken to a police station after an incident involving a “korope”, she allegedly told the police that her husband and others had defrauded her of N50 million and some properties under the guise of helping her because she was trying to conceive.
Onadeko denied knowledge of the alleged N50 million. He also said he did not know anything about the money people were discussing online.
The allegation that she was prevented from driving
Another claim that surfaced after Osoba’s death was that she had allegedly been prevented from driving her car.
Onadeko rejected that claim, saying Osoba drove her Lexus vehicle herself when she travelled to Iperu shortly before her death. He stated that she left his abode about 2 weeks before her death to visit her mother’s family members who reside in Iperu.
He added that he has never met any of her family members, however they planned that she goes to them first, before they go together for a formal introduction.
Onadeko said Osoba had reservations about visiting her maternal family because she believed they had not treated her well.
However, he said he encouraged her to maintain contact with them because they were planning to get married.
The smoking and drug-use claims
Onadeko also made claims about Osoba’s alleged substance use. He said she struggled with smoking colos and that he had encouraged her to stop.
“She was dealing with smoking habit. And I wanted her to stop it. All the church members know about her smoking habit.”
But elsewhere in the interview, he made a more serious allegation, claiming that Osoba was a drug user. He said he did not know about it when their relationship began. He claimed:
“Tope was a drug addict. I have a lot of videos on my phone as evidence but I don’t want it to be on social media. I have complained to her severally to stop but she didn’t. At times she would run out of the house for days just because I told her to stop using drgs. She hid it from me that she was taking drugs until six months after we started living together. This became an embarrassment to me and the church. I told her that little children in the church loved to be around her and it was not fair for her to be taking colos openly. All the church members knew she was taking colos. Everybody around her knew. I didn’t take her to a rehab centre because I couldn’t afford it. All I could offer was a piece of advice.”
The claim that she was poisoned
Perhaps the most serious rumour surrounding the actress’ death was that she had been given poisoned water.
According to claims circulating online, Osoba allegedly sent a message to her personal assistant saying that she had been given poisoned water in her fiancé’s house. The allegation was also linked to a man identified as James.
James reportedly denied giving Osoba any poisoned water during the Celestial Reality Check interview. Onadeko also rejected the allegation. He argued that Osoba had already left the house weeks before her death.
“Concerning the allegation that she was given poisoned water in my house, she already left the house about two weeks ago so if she was poisoned, she should have died since.”
The rape allegation and Pelumi’s denial
Another disturbing allegation involved a church worker identified as Pelumi. According to the claims circulating after Osoba’s death, the actress allegedly accused Pelumi of raping her in the church and recording the alleged act.
Pelumi denied the allegation during the Celestial Reality Check interview. He reportedly claimed that when Osoba was under the influence of drugs, he would sometimes ask her to leave the kitchen or wherever she was and go to sleep on the floor.
He also alleged that she sometimes lost her memory when high and would occasionally attempt to fight him.
Tope Osoba’s maternal family says there was a troubling change after her surgery
Another major account came from members of Osoba’s family during an investigative interview conducted by actor Kunle Afod.
They spoke about how entertaining and welcoming Temitope Osoba was, revealing that after her dad died in year 2000 and her mum (their sister) died in 2003, they took her in. Her father’s family eventually came to take her at age six although they still kept in touch.
After growing up, she still visited them at intervals and was at all their family functions from weddings to yearly Ileya celebrations and more. They claimed the only issue they ever had was that she smoked and they didn’t hide their dislike for it, which usually caused friction between them.
The family members, identified as relatives from her late mother’s side, claimed that Osoba became distant from them after she was discharged following her breast cancer surgery.
They narrated how they were there for her before her surgery and during it, adding that they all donated money for her to do the major surgery at Evacare after it was discovered that the lump previously taken out was cancerous.
Things too a different turn after the surgery was successful and she was discharged without the knowledge of her mother’s sisters who took her to the hospital. The family later found out Foluke Daramola and her fiancé, Itunu took her from the hospital.
According to their account, she stopped communicating with members of the family, including her grandparent, and eventually blocked their numbers. They later learnt that she had moved into the residence of her fiancé, Itunu Onadeko. The family placed the move around 2023.
Their account also described a final distress call. According to them, on the Tuesday immediately before her death, Osoba called her late mother’s younger sister, Peju at around 6am in panic and pleaded with her to come and pick her up.
They also claimed that she asked her to ensure that she was buried beside her late mother in Iperu, Ogun State, if anything happened to her. The family further claimed that she sent multiple messages after the call, asking them to come pick her although her line was unreachable.
Peju further recalled how the family became increasingly worried after they could no longer establish Tope’s whereabouts. She said she immediately called her elder sister and other family members, and they began to fear that something serious might have happened to her, including the possibility that she had been kidnapped.
Amid the confusion, a strange number called Peju. The woman on the other end introduced herself as Tope’s hairdresser and told her that Tope had been staying in her home for about two weeks.
According to Peju, the hairdresser said Tope was not feeling okay and gave her aunty’s contact to call the family so that someone could come and pick her up.
The revelation shocked the family because they had believed Tope was with her boyfriend. They were also surprised to learn that her location had changed.
The family left the house shortly after 6am and initially set out for Sapati. However, according to the family’s account, Tope’s boyfriend, Itunu, had told the actress to go to Iperu and pretend that they had not been together for two months.
When Tope was reportedly no longer okay, Itunu allegedly sent the contact of Prophetess Kehinde Osoba and asked that Tope be taken to her.
The family said this was another troubling part of the situation. Despite Tope having lived with Itunu for more than two years, they said they had never set eyes on him.
Because of the new information they received, Tope’s aunties decided not to continue to Sapati. Instead, they headed to Ikorodu, where the prophetess was reportedly located.
Throughout this period, the family continued speaking with the hairdresser on the phone, trying to establish Tope’s exact location.
This was because the hairdresser reportedly told them that she did not know the exact address because Itunu had not sent the location to her.
Determined to find Tope, the family went online and searched for the address of Prophetess Kehinde Osoba. After finding what they believed was the prophetess’ address, they sent the information to the hairdresser.
But before they could get to the bottom of the situation, another call came. The family was told that Tope was now at the police station.
The strange journey in the “korope”
One of the most unusual accounts to emerge concerns what reportedly happened hours before Osoba’s death. A voice note attributed to an eyewitness began circulating after her death.
According to the account, LASTMA officers stopped a vehicle when Osoba, who was dressed in a white garment, suddenly jumped out of a “korope”.
The eyewitness claimed that Osoba was screaming that the driver and the woman beside her, who was also dressed in white, were taking her somewhere to kill her.
According to the same account, the woman claimed that Osoba was her sister and had a mental-health problem. Osoba allegedly rejected that explanation. She reportedly went back into the “korope” to retrieve her car keys and insisted that she was not insane.
The eyewitness also claimed that Osoba said her husband was in contact with the driver and that she had been defrauded of N50 million and some properties. The police were called.
According to the eyewitness account, the people involved were taken to a police station. The IPO reportedly said Osoba told the police that her husband and some others had duped her. However, the police allegedly said they could not handle the matter because another station outside their jurisdiction was already investigating it.
What allegedly happened at the police station
The eyewitness account becomes even more detailed from this point. According to the account, while Osoba was at the station, she started menstruating. A policewoman reportedly helped her clean herself.
She allegedly changed clothes inside the “korope” because her clothes were inside the vehicle. The eyewitness also claimed that Osoba told the police she had not bathed for three days and was hungry. Food was reportedly bought for her. After eating, she allegedly became calmer.
The account said her family later arrived from Sagamu and that Osoba was released into their care. The driver and the woman who had been travelling with her were also reportedly released.
According to the eyewitness, Osoba and her family then left the police station in the same “korope”.
The account ends with a startling detail that Osoba was reportedly alive when she left the station, yet news of her death was announced later that evening.
This account is one of the reasons questions about her final hours have continued.
Prophetess Kehinde Osoba’s name enters the story
The name of Prophetess Kehinde Osoba also became part of the controversy. According to the accounts surrounding the case, Temitope Osoba had been travelling with her friend to visit Kehinde, whom she regarded as an adopted mother.
Itunu Onadeko confirmed that Osoba had gone to visit the prophetess. He said she had also wanted to see him, but he was unavailable because of church activities.
“She had insisted to see Mrs Kehinde Osoba, she also has a church, although she said she wanted to see me too. When they left for there, I told them that I wasn’t chanced to go that day because of church programmes.
“The hairdresser that Tope was sleeping in her place was the person that went with her. We maintained communication and she even posted ‘Ogo tun tun’ until I heard that she died in the police station.”
Kehinde later reportedly came forward to clear her name after reports emerged that Osoba had been on her way to her residence.
According to Kehinde’s account, Osoba, her friend and the driver came to her place but, she was not at home. They therefore left.
Shortly before Osoba’s death, she allegedly sent a voice note to Prophetess Kehinde. In it, she reportedly said:
“Mummy please let them come and carry my dead body so that I can be giving a befitting burial.”
Kehinde reportedly said she did not see the voice note at the time. Instead, she sent her own voice note telling Osoba that she should have waited for her rather than leaving.
The timing and context of the voice note have added another layer to the questions surrounding Osoba’s final hours.
Onadeko’s account of the final day
Onadeko gave his own version of what happened on the day Osoba died. He said Osoba told him that she and her friend were going to Prophetess Kehinde Osoba’s place.
He said Kehinde had earlier contacted him because she wanted to see him, but he told her he would make time later. According to him, he remained in contact with Osoba while she was travelling.
At about 7pm, he said she posted “Ogo Tuntun” on her WhatsApp status, which made him believe she had arrived at the prophetess’ place. Then, he said, her calls stopped being answered.
Several hours later, around midnight, he received a call. The caller, according to Onadeko, was an unidentified person. The caller allegedly told him that Osoba had died at a police station in Ikorodu.
“It was a random person that called me around 12 am that she died in a police station in Ikorodu and I should run away. I was like why should I run away when I didn’t commit any crime.”
Onadeko said he did not know the particular police station.
“Although I don’t know the police station she died but I reported myself in a nearby one.”
The claim that Osoba died at a police station is therefore Onadeko’s account of what an unidentified caller told him. He himself said he did not know which police station was involved.
Onadeko also revealed he wasn’t in contact with any of Tope’s relatives but he knew only an uncle identified as Taiwo. He added that he called him after learning of her death. According to him, Taiwo was angry and refused to speak with him.
“She’s left the church about three weeks ago before her death. Since she died, I didn’t call any of her family. It was one of his uncles, Taiwo that I called but he was really mad at me and insisted that he doesn’t want to speak with me.”
What really happened to her at the end? Cancer, poisoning or something else?
That is the question that remains unanswered.
There are now several versions of Osoba’s final days. Her family has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding her life immediately before her death and has rejected unauthorised reports.
The original cancer theory remains one of the biggest questions surrounding Osoba’s death because of her medical history.
But it is important not to confuse her history of cancer with proof that cancer caused her death. Osoba had undergone treatment and surgery. She had publicly spoken about her recovery and her return to the entertainment industry.
Her family also rejected reports linking her death to unverified circumstances.
Despite the multiple reports surrounding her death, at this point, it would be premature to state that any one of these explanations caused Osoba’s death.
What is confirmed, and what remains a claim?
What is confirmed is that Temitope Osoba died on August 4, 2026, at the age of 40.
It is also established that she had previously battled breast cancer, underwent surgery and later returned to public life and acting.
Her family publicly objected to speculative reports about the circumstances of her death.
Her burial has been scheduled for Thursday, August 13, 2026, in Iperu Remo, Ogun State. The funeral service is scheduled for 10am to 11am at Saint James Anglican Church, Iperu Remo, followed by her interment at Iperu Remo Cemetery. Mourners have been asked to wear white.
Friends and colleagues are also expected to honour her with a candlelight and artiste night on Tuesday, August 11, at LTV 8, popularly known as the Blueroof, in Ikeja, Lagos.
What remains unconfirmed are the many claims surrounding her final hours. There is no established evidence in the accounts presented that cancer, poison or maltreatment caused her death.
A life that ended with too many unanswered questions
Before the controversy surrounding her death, Temitope Osoba was known for her work in Yoruba-language Nollywood.
Born on December 2, 1985, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, she was her father’s first child and her mother’s only child. She lost her parents at a young age and was raised by her paternal grandmother in Lagos.
She studied in Lagos before obtaining a degree in Business Education from Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ogun State.
Her entertainment journey began before mainstream acting. She worked as a dancer and video vixen and eventually found her way into acting in 2005 after she accidentally visited a movie rehearsal location.
She later became known for films including Oogun Mi, Gucci Girls and Igboro Ti Daru, and she also produced her own movie, Single Ladies.
Her battle with breast cancer became another major part of her story. After treatment and surgery, she returned to public life and the movie industry, speaking about the experience as one that changed and empowered her.
Her death, however, has now opened another chapter filled with conflicting accounts, allegations, rumours and unanswered questions.
Until the circumstances are independently established, the question at the centre of the controversy remains: what really happened to Temitope Osoba in the final hours of her life?
