On August 13, 1989, Super Eagles midfielder Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji, 25, collapsed and died in the closing minutes of Nigeria’s 1990 World Cup qualifier against Angola at the Lagos National Stadium in Surulere.
In the 77th minute, with the score locked at 1-1, Okwaraji slumped to the turf. Stadium medical staff rushed to his aid and rushed him to St. Nicholas Hospital on Lagos Island, where he was pronounced dead.
Doctors later disclosed that he died as a result of congestive heart failure.
Okwaraji, born in Orlu, Imo State, was more than a footballer. He was a law graduate with a master’s degree in international law. He played his club football in Germany with SSV Ulm, and was widely admired for refusing appearance fees to represent Nigeria.
“He died for Nigeria,” a teammate said in the dressing room after the match. “Sam loved this shirt more than anything.”
45,000 fans fell into stunned silence as news spread through the stands. The Nigeria Football Association declared a week of mourning. FIFA President João Havelange sent condolences, calling Okwaraji “a symbol of dedication.”
Okwaraji earned 15 caps for Nigeria and was part of the squad that reached the final of the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations.
The NFF said burial arrangements in Umudioka, Imo State, would be announced with the family. President Ibrahim Babangida described the loss as “a national tragedy” and ordered flags to fly at half-mast.
