For years, Bella Okagbue and Segun “Sheggz” Olusemo gave fans plenty to believe in. Their romance began under the cameras of Big Brother Naija, survived the end of the reality show and continued into a relationship that appeared to have grown beyond television.
There were anniversary posts, public declarations and even moments when marriage was openly discussed. In January 2024, when breakup rumours surfaced, Sheggz dismissed them and referred to Bella as his “wife”.
But by January 2026, the relationship had ended and the public did not immediately get the full story. For months, Bella and Sheggz largely kept their separate accounts private, even as fans noticed signs that something had changed. Then, in August, the silence broke.
What started with Sheggz explaining why the relationship ended quickly became a much bigger dispute. There were competing accounts of trust, honesty, marriage and promises. There were allegations of abuse and cheating. There were also claims about money, including an alleged ₦11 million debt. And within days, lawyers entered the picture.
On August 21, Sheggz’s legal team sent Bella a cease-and-desist and defamation notice. Three days later, Bella’s lawyers responded, rejecting the allegations and making fresh claims of their own including an alleged breach of promise to marry, misrepresentation of intentions amounting to deceit and loans allegedly obtained by false pretence.
The former “Shella” story had taken a very different turn.
The BBNaija Romance That Became Real
Bella and Sheggz met during the 2022 edition of Big Brother Naija, where their relationship quickly became one of the season’s biggest storylines.
Their love story which started inside the Level Up house continued after they left the show. The pair became one of the few BBNaija relationships to maintain public attention long after the cameras stopped rolling.
By July 2023, they were celebrating their first anniversary. Sheggz described the relationship as something that had survived the odds, while Bella looked ahead to what the future might bring.
In January 2024, rumours circulated that the couple had broken up. The reports even came with claims about marriage and a pregnancy, but Sheggz publicly dismissed the breakup story.
On January 16, 2024, he wrote on X that he and Bella were fine, referring to her as “my wife” and explaining that his trip away was simply to visit his family. He also said it would be the last time he addressed such rumours.
At the time, the relationship appeared to have survived another round of public speculation. However, behind the scenes, the two would later give very different accounts of what was happening between them.
What Changed Before The January 2026 Breakup?
The first detailed explanation came from Sheggz on August 19, 2026. After months of speculation about their relationship, he finally confirmed that he and Bella had actually gone their separate ways in January 2026.
Sheggz said he had stayed quiet because he preferred to keep his private life away from the internet and wanted to protect his family. But he felt compelled to speak after what he described as attempts to damage his reputation and unfairly tarnish his character.
He also directly addressed two serious allegations.Sheggz said he was not an abuser and insisted that he did not cheat on Bella. He said he had been single since January, but his explanation for what happened went further back.
According to Sheggz, much of 2025 had been extremely difficult. He said he spent a significant amount of time in and out of hospital and later travelled to England for treatment and recovery. When he returned to Nigeria in October 2025, he said he became aware of information that made him question the honesty within his relationship.
Sheggz said he had given several opportunities since 2024 for the truth to be shared with him, but claimed that this did not happen. He said the situation was particularly difficult because he had loved Bella deeply and genuinely believed they would spend their lives together. He also said he struggled with how the situation was handled and sometimes felt there was not enough remorse or understanding.
The Relationship Ended In January But They Tried Again
Although Sheggz said the relationship ended in January, he made it clear that the story did not end there. He said they attempted to reconcile afterwards. Ultimately, however, he said he reached the conclusion that there were issues of trust and respect that he could not overlook, particularly because marriage was being considered.
For Sheggz, marriage required mutual respect, honesty and the ability to communicate properly. He said he genuinely wanted the relationship to work and had even taken a significant step towards marriage by buying a ring.
“I even went as far as purchasing a ring because I believed in the possibility of a future together,” he said.
That revelation would become particularly significant when Bella eventually gave her own account.
Then Came Bella’s Side: “A hundred promises. Not one fulfilled”
On August 21, two days after Sheggz’s statement, Bella broke her silence. She explained that she had watched people tell her story for her while she remained quiet because she believed certain things should stay private.
But, she added, her silence should not be mistaken for guilt. Bella said she had genuinely loved Sheggz and defended their relationship because she believed in it at the time.
She also acknowledged that she had chosen to give him another chance because she believed people could change. That, she said, was her decision and one she accepted. But Bella made it clear that believing someone could change did not mean waiting forever for that change. She also drew a distinction between the person the public sees and the person experienced privately.
“The person everyone experiences publicly isn’t always the person you experience privately,” she said.
Then she addressed the issue of marriage and the ring. 💍 Bella rejected any suggestion that wanting marriage with someone she loved amounted to desperation. Instead, she argued that knowing when not to marry someone could require even more courage than choosing to stay.
She also dismissed the idea that a ring, on its own, settled what had gone wrong in the relationship.
“A hundred promises. Not one fulfilled,” she wrote.
Bella said that at some point, a person stops listening to promises and starts paying attention to patterns. She acknowledged that there were versions of events circulating that did not reflect her experience, while also saying there were parts of her experience she had deliberately chosen not to discuss publicly.
Those details, she said, were hers to tell when appropriate. She maintained that she had given the relationship love, change a chance and loyalty “in abundance”. But she said loyalty has a limit when trust, respect and peace can no longer exist alongside it.
Bella ended by saying she did not regret being the woman who chose to try again, but now respected herself enough to know when trying again was no longer the answer.
From Breakup Explanations To Money Allegations
The situation became more complicated as alleged private conversations began circulating online.
Among the claims was an alleged ₦11 million debt. Purported screenshots circulating online appeared to show conversations involving Bella, Sheggz and members of his family, with allegations that Sheggz owed Bella money and had not repaid it.
Some of the alleged conversations also touched on marriage and the future of their relationship, while other screenshots purportedly showed Sheggz asking Bella for money.
The money dispute soon moved from social media allegations into the lawyers’ correspondence.
August 21: Sheggz’s Lawyers Issue Legal Warning
On August 21, lawyers representing Sheggz formally entered the dispute. Their letter to Bella was titled “Cease and Desist Notice: Defamation and Damage to Reputation.”
According to the notice, Sheggz’s lawyers said their client had become aware of statements Bella allegedly made about him after their relationship ended. The lawyers summarised the claims they said Bella had made. Among them was an allegation that Sheggz had been violent towards her. They also referred to the claim that he had borrowed ₦11 million from Bella and had not refunded it.
The letter further accused Bella of mentioning Sheggz’s siblings and making statements involving his mother and other family members.
His lawyers also accused her of cyberbullying him. More seriously, they said Bella had allegedly threatened to use social media, bloggers and influencers in a way that could cause Sheggz severe mental distress, including distress that could lead to him harming himself.
The legal team said the alleged statements had caused substantial harm to their client’s mental health, business, reputation and character, as well as to the reputation of his family. They also said the alleged conduct had affected how he was viewed by his peers, business partners and members of the public.
What Did Sheggz’s Lawyers demand?
The demands were straightforward. They wanted Bella to immediately:
- Cease and desist from making, publishing, sharing or repeating the alleged false statements.
- Remove posts, comments, interviews, reviews and other digital content containing the alleged statements.
- Publish a clear and conspicuous retraction and apology on the same platform where the statements were made.
- Provide written confirmation that she had complied with the demands.
The lawyers also warned that making unverified and malicious accusations could have civil and criminal consequences. The notice did not simply concern Bella’s own social media activity.
It also referred to statements allegedly communicated to third parties, including X, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and bloggers.
The message from Sheggz’s legal team was therefore clear: stop talking about him and his family in the alleged manner, remove the material and retract it.
But Bella’s lawyers were not prepared to accept those demands.
August 24: Bella’s Lawyers Turn The Legal Threat Around
Three days later, on August 24, Bella’s lawyers, The Royal Partners, responded to Sheggz’s legal representatives. Their letter was titled “Cease and Desist: Reply to Notice of Defamation and Damage to Reputation.”
And rather than apologise or retract anything, Bella’s lawyers rejected the allegations. They said their client “unreservedly denies” the allegations against her and described the claims as spurious and baseless.
They also said they had struggled to identify exactly which statements Sheggz’s lawyers considered defamatory.
According to Bella’s legal team, it was difficult to determine what specific statements were supposedly capable of damaging Sheggz’s reputation or exposing him to ridicule, hatred or contempt.
They also questioned whether the social media statement referenced in Sheggz’s lawyers’ letter actually gave rise to the claims being made against Bella.
But then the response took the dispute in a new direction.
Bella’s Lawyers Allege Breach of promise to marry
Bella’s lawyers argued that the relationship should not simply be described as one that had “irretrievably broken down”.
They characterised it differently. According to them, the relationship involved an alleged “breach of promise to marry” and misrepresentation of intentions amounting to deceit.
That was a major shift in the dispute. Sheggz had presented the ring as evidence that he genuinely intended to marry Bella. Bella’s lawyers, however, raised a different question: whether promises and intentions surrounding marriage had been represented to Bella in a way that amounted to deceit.
They did not accept Sheggz’s account as the complete picture of the relationship. Instead, they presented their client’s case as one involving promises that, according to Bella, were not fulfilled. The allegation remains a claim made on Bella’s behalf and has not been determined by a court.
Then Came The Loans By “False Pretence” Allegation & Evidence Of Alleged Defamation
Bella’s lawyers also made a fresh financial allegation. They said:
“Your client obtained several loans by false pretense from our Client.”
They added that they would pursue the matter before a competent court and said they had evidence to support the claim. This is significant because it goes beyond the ₦11 million figure that had been circulating online.
The August 24 legal response refers to “several loans”, but the letter, in the portion made public, does not give a total amount for those alleged loans.
Bella’s legal team also challenged the foundation of Sheggz’s defamation complaint. They said the burden was on Sheggz to provide the alleged defamatory statements or receipts of whatever statements he claimed Bella had made against him or his family.
They also rejected the demand for a retraction and apology. Their position was that Bella had not made false statements, had not published statements capable of leading to a defamation action and therefore had nothing to retract.
On mental distress claims, Sheggz’s lawyers said their client had suffered substantial harm to his mental health as a result of Bella’s alleged statements. Bella’s lawyers pushed back.
They argued that Sheggz was making the assertion of mental distress and therefore had to prove which statement caused that distress. They also stated that any suffering he may have experienced could not automatically be attributed to Bella.
The Lawyers’ Dispute Spills Into The Lawyers Themselves
The August 24 response also contained an unusual allegation involving the legal teams. Bella’s lawyers accused a member of Sheggz’s legal team of contacting their client directly through unsolicited messages, phone calls and video calls at odd hours.
They described the alleged conduct as unethical and warned the lawyer to stop. They also said the communication was being forwarded to the relevant professional authorities.
This meant that by August 24, the dispute was no longer simply about what Bella and Sheggz allegedly said to each other. Their respective legal representatives had now become part of the growing controversy.
From “Shella” To Competing Versions Of Same Relationship
The striking part of the fallout is that both Bella and Sheggz describe themselves as people who genuinely wanted the relationship to work.
Sheggz says he loved Bella, hoped they would spend their lives together and even bought a ring before the relationship ended.
Bella says she loved Sheggz too, defended the relationship and gave him another chance because she believed people could change.
But they arrived at very different conclusions about what went wrong.
For Sheggz, the central problems were trust, honesty and respect which he said he could not ignore when thinking about marriage.
For Bella, the issue appears to have been more about what she says she experienced privately, the promises she says were repeatedly made and the patterns she says eventually became impossible to overlook.
What Happens Next?
For a couple whose relationship began in front of millions of viewers, the irony is that some of the most serious parts of its collapse happened away from the cameras.
For now, the former BBNaija couple who once built a relationship that fans followed from the Level Uphouse into real life are left with two very different versions of what happened and lawyers now standing between them.
The romance may have ended in January. But the fight over what actually happened inside it is only beginning.
