For more than 20 years, the UEFA Champions League has produced a succession of prolific goalscorers, but few have shaped its scoring history as profoundly as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and, more recently, Kylian Mbappé.
The latest addition to that elite group is Mbappé, whose 15 goals in 11 appearances made him the leading scorer of the 2025/26 Champions League campaign.
According to UEFA, the Real Madrid forward scored 13 times during the league phase, setting a new record for that stage, before adding two more goals in the knockout rounds.
The achievement was Mbappé’s second Champions League scoring crown after he previously shared the honour with Harry Kane in 2023/24, when both forwards finished with eight goals.
While several players have occupied the top of the scoring charts since the turn of the millennium, the period between 2007/08 and 2019/20 was largely defined by the remarkable consistency of Ronaldo and Messi.
The pair claimed the top-scorer award in 12 of those 13 campaigns, with Robert Lewandowski breaking their sequence in 2019/20.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo’s first Champions League scoring crown came in 2007/08, when his eight goals for Manchester United helped the English club win the trophy, including his goal in the final against Chelsea.
The Portuguese forward returned to the summit with 12 goals in 2012/13 before producing 17 goals for Real Madrid in 2013/14, a single-season tally that remains the highest on the list.
Ronaldo shared the 2014/15 scoring crown with Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Neymar after all three players finished with 10 goals.
He then recorded 16 goals in 2015/16, followed by 12 in 2016/17 and 15 in 2017/18.
Across that period, Ronaldo finished as the Champions League’s leading scorer seven times between 2007/08 and 2017/18.
2. Lionel Messi
Messi’s period at the top began in 2008/09, when he scored nine goals for Barcelona.
The Argentine followed that with eight goals in 2009/10, 12 in 2010/11 and 14 in 2011/12, establishing himself as one of the competition’s most consistent scorers.
Messi returned to the summit in 2018/19 with 12 goals, while his six scoring crowns during his Barcelona career placed him among the competition’s most decorated marksmen.
His most notable shared honour came in 2014/15, when he finished level with Ronaldo and Neymar on 10 goals.
3. Kylian Mbappé
Mbappé has increasingly emerged as the leading figure of the next scoring generation, having twice finished as the Champions League’s top scorer.
His first crown came jointly with Kane in 2023/24 after both players scored eight goals.
The Frenchman then claimed the award outright in 2025/26 after scoring 15 goals in 11 appearances.
His 13 goals during the league phase represented a new record for that stage, while his overall tally placed him alongside some of the competition’s most impressive single-season scoring performances.
How the scoring crowns changed hands
The Champions League scoring list began the new millennium with Raúl, who scored seven goals for Real Madrid in 2000/01.
Ruud van Nistelrooy followed with 10 goals for Manchester United in 2001/02 and 12 in 2002/03, before Fernando Morientes led the charts with nine for Monaco in 2003/04.
Van Nistelrooy returned to the top with eight goals for Manchester United in 2004/05, followed by Andriy Shevchenko’s nine for AC Milan in 2005/06 and Kaká’s 10 for the Italian club in 2006/07.
After Ronaldo and Messi dominated much of the following era, Lewandowski ended their run in 2019/20 with 15 goals for Bayern Munich.
Erling Haaland subsequently led the charts with 10 goals for Borussia Dortmund in 2020/21, while Karim Benzema recorded 15 for Real Madrid in 2021/22.
Haaland returned to the summit in 2022/23 with 12 goals as Manchester City won the Champions League for the first time.
Kane and Mbappé then shared the 2023/24 honour with eight goals each, before Raphinha and Serhou Guirassy finished jointly on 13 goals apiece in 2024/25.
The sequence illustrates how the Champions League scoring crown has moved through different generations, from Raúl and van Nistelrooy to Ronaldo and Messi, and now towards Mbappé and other emerging forwards.
For the modern era, however, Ronaldo’s 17-goal campaign in 2013/14 and Messi’s sustained run of scoring excellence remain major benchmarks.
Mbappé’s latest campaign has added another significant chapter to that history, with his 15 goals and record 13-goal league-phase haul strengthening his position among the competition’s leading scorers.
