On September 13, 1999, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, was formed.
The group was established with a stated goal of ending what it described as “long years of political seclusion” for people in the Southeast and parts of the South-South.
Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, founder of the group said MASSOB was designed as a civil platform to pursue self-determination through dialogue, protests, and civic mobilization, not armed conflict.
According to its founding statement, MASSOB’s sole aim was to “emancipate the people of the Southeast and parts of the South-South” through peaceful means.
“Our mandate from inception has been clear,” an official said. “We chose nonviolence to draw attention to marginalization, infrastructure deficits, and political exclusion affecting our people.”
Since 1999, the group has organized rallies, sit-at-home protests, and public sensitization campaigns across the five Southeast states — Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo — as well as in parts of Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
Over the years MASSOB has faced proscription debates, arrests of members, and government crackdowns. The group maintains that its activities remain within constitutional agitation.
Political analysts note that MASSOB’s emergence helped shape post-military discussions around regional representation and resource control.
