For years, Mosun Filani-Oduoye was one of the familiar faces in Yoruba Nollywood, known for films such as Iku Ewa, Jenifa, Eri-Ife and Different Strokes. But after getting married and starting a family, the actress gradually stepped away from the industry.
Her absence led to questions about what happened to her career, while her marriage became the subject of public discussion and speculation.
Now, years later, Filani has opened up again about the decision that took her away from the screen. She has also addressed a long-running description of her as a “second wife”, explaining how the label does not accurately describe her marriage.
Mosun Filani’s Journey Into Acting
Mosun Filani’s interest in acting began long before she became a familiar face on television and in Yoruba films. She started acting on stage while studying at the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta. She later studied Business Administration at Tai Solarin University of Education before beginning her professional acting career in 2005.
Her career grew steadily, and she became known particularly for her work in Yoruba-language films. Among the productions she featured in are Iku Ewa, Eri-Ife, Jenifa, Iyo Aye, Ami Ayo and Different Strokes. She also produced and starred in Different Strokes, an English-language movie released in 2023.
Her career was therefore already established when marriage and motherhood changed the direction of her life.
Why Mosun Filani Stepped Away From Acting
Mosun Filani has repeatedly made it clear that her disappearance from the screen was not because she had lost interest in acting. It was a decision she made after marriage. In a 2023 interview, she described the move as a deliberate sacrifice.
“It was a deliberate decision to take a break from the movie industry after I got married.”
She explained that she believed marriage required sacrifice and that she wanted to protect her home while she still had young children.
“The industry will always be there, but if one loses one’s home and marriage, it is gone.”
For Filani, it was about putting one responsibility ahead of another for a period of time. She also explained how motherhood changed what was possible for her professionally.
Before having children, she could spend several days on a movie location. After becoming a mother, things were different. She recalled attending a colleague’s movie premiere but having to leave before the movie ended because her children were waiting for her at home. That experience, she said, was part of the sacrifice that came with motherhood.
The actress and mother of two gave an even clearer explanation in 2023 when she announced that she was returning to Nollywood.
At the time, she said her children were still young and that she did not want to leave their upbringing entirely in the hands of a domestic worker.
“I took some time off movies; there is a time and season for everything, (I did it) to focus on my family.”
“My children are still young and I don’t want to leave them in the hands of a maid.”
The actress also pointed out that her husband was busy with his career, making it important for someone to be available at home. Acting, she explained, could require travelling and spending long periods away from home. Her plan was therefore simple: wait until her children were old enough to take care of themselves before fully returning to the industry.
Why Timing Mattered
In another interview published in 2024, Filani maintained that raising her children had been more important to her than building a business or remaining constantly visible in Nollywood. She said:
“Business was not my priority. I decided to take that break.”
The actress explained that childhood passes quickly and that parents have only a limited period to shape their children before they become more independent. She particularly mentioned the influence of social media and her desire to be involved in raising her children during those formative years.
Her comments showed that the break was not an accidental career slowdown. It was a choice she had made based on where she believed her responsibilities were at that point in her life.
The 2023 Comeback Did Not End The Questions
In March 2023, Filani announced that she was ready to return to Nollywood. She shared a message on Instagram saying:
“There is time and season for everything in life. Am back and ready. Send ur script! We moove!”
The announcement marked her return to the industry after years away from the screen. She also returned as an actress and producer with Different Strokes, featuring actors including Mercy Johnson-Okojie, Lilian Esoro and Jim Iyke.
But her return did not mean that the questions surrounding her marriage had disappeared. One issue in particular has followed her since the early years of her marriage, which is the claim that she became a second wife.
How The “Second Wife” Tag Started
Filani married businessman and politician Kayode Oduoye in 2012. Around the time of the marriage, reports emerged claiming that she had taken another woman’s husband. Filani strongly rejected the allegation. In a February 2012 interview, shortly after her traditional wedding, she said:
“I have not snatched anybody’s husband.”
She maintained that she met Oduoye after he had separated from his former wife.
“I met him after he was separated from his ex wife and there was no woman in his house or in his life as at when we met.”
At the time, she also said she had never met or communicated with his former wife before meeting him. The controversy, however, continued to resurface over the years.
What She Said About The Marriage In 2015
Three years later, Filani gave another account of how she met her husband. In a 2015 interview, she said the two met during one of his visits to Abeokuta. When asked about claims that she had influenced his divorce from his first wife, she was direct:
“My husband had divorced his first wife before we met. I have no part in any of the proceedings.”
She added that she only learned about his previous marriage after they had already met. That interview became another part of her long-standing explanation that she did not enter the marriage while another woman was still living with her husband.
Filani Addresses The “Second Wife” Tag Again
In her latest interview with BBC Yoruba, published on September 24, 2026, the actress revisited the issue. This time, she was responding to the continued description of her as a second wife. Her response was clear:
“I’m not a second wife; my husband might have had a marriage before, but I didn’t meet anyone in his house.”
She did not deny that her husband had been married before. Instead, she drew a distinction between his previous marriage and the circumstances in which she met him. It is a clarification she has essentially made in different forms since 2012, when the controversy first became public.
Her Children Are Grown
The latest development is that the reason Filani originally gave for stepping away from acting has changed. Her children who are now in their early teens (11 & 12) are no longer as dependent on her as they were when she first took the break. In the recent BBC Yoruba interview, she said:
“I stopped acting to focus on my family. My kids are grown; they know left from right, and it is time for me to get back to acting.”
That statement brings her story full circle. The same family responsibilities that once made her put acting on hold are now allowing her to consider the next stage of her career.

Mosun Filani’s years away from Nollywood have often been discussed as though she simply disappeared from the industry when she was at the peak of her career.
