The long running clash between Judy Austin and Rita Edochie has now moved from social media exchanges into the courtroom, but the events surrounding their latest appearance in Abuja have opened another chapter that goes far beyond the claims contained in the lawsuit. With both women eventually facing the court over a dispute that has been building publicly for years, attention quickly moved from the legal documents to the statements, confrontations and reactions that followed the proceedings.

September 29, 2026, became a particularly important date in the dispute as Judy and Rita appeared at the Abuja court while people closely following the wider Edochie family controversy watched the developments unfold. The proceedings themselves were only part of the story, because events around the court premises, comments made after the hearing and reactions from people connected to the wider dispute soon pushed the matter back into public conversation.

Judy Austin had taken Rita Edochie to court over alleged defamatory publications and was seeking ₦1 billion in general damages, together with other orders from the court. Rita, however, arrived at the hearing with a very different position, having repeatedly insisted that the statements for which she was being sued were part of her public commentary on morality and relationships. Her comments before and after the hearing showed that the disagreement remained deeply personal even as the legal process continued.

The appearance also brought other familiar names back into the story. Emmanuel Obasi, Judy Austin’s former husband, had his own separate case involving another ₦1 billion claim. May Edochie remained connected to the wider history surrounding the dispute, while Emeka Ugwuonye, who previously represented May, became involved in the post hearing drama after reacting strongly to events outside the court and later receiving a phone call from Judy during a Facebook Live session.

With the next court date reportedly fixed for November 24, 2026, the legal battle is still far from a final conclusion. The September 29 proceedings therefore offer a closer look at how the different sides responded once Judy and Rita finally came face to face with the court proceedings.

The lawsuit that brought Judy Austin before the court

Judy Austin filed the defamation case against Rita Edochie in August 2026 at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja. The court documents identified Judy as the claimant and Rita as the defendant, with Judy seeking ₦1 billion in general damages over publications and statements she considered defamatory.

The reliefs sought by Judy went beyond financial compensation. She also asked the court to direct Rita to publish a full and unreserved apology and retraction in at least 2 national newspapers, publish the apology on her social media platforms and remove the allegedly defamatory statements from her online platforms.

Judy further sought an order restraining Rita from making or circulating further statements she considered defamatory. The claim also included ₦50 million as the cost of prosecuting the case and 10% post judgment interest on the judgment sum until payment.

Judy publicly announced the legal action in August with the words “Enough is enough!” after sharing details of the writ. That announcement marked a significant change in the nature of a dispute that had previously played out largely through social media posts, interviews, public statements and responses from people connected to the Edochie family.

Rita Edochie’s long public criticism of Judy

Rita Edochie’s involvement in the dispute stretches back several years and is closely connected to the wider controversy surrounding Yul Edochie, Judy Austin and May Edochie. Rita has repeatedly spoken publicly about marriage, morality and relationships, while directly addressing issues surrounding Judy and Yul.

Her social media posts became a major part of the disagreement because Judy’s lawsuit centres on statements attributed to Rita. Rita has not accepted Judy’s description of those statements as defamatory and has continued to defend the nature of her online commentary.

The argument has therefore developed along 2 different tracks. Judy has taken the dispute into court, asking for damages and several orders against Rita, while Rita has continued to present her public comments as part of her position on moral issues and relationships.

That position became even clearer as the September 29 hearing approached, particularly after Rita responded to reports surrounding the case and made it clear that she was prepared to appear before the court.

Rita’s challenge over Judy’s name

One of Rita’s earliest responses to the lawsuit focused on the name written on the court documents. The papers referred to Judy as “Mrs Judith Yul Edochie,” a description Rita publicly challenged.

Rita said she did not recognise that name and maintained that the woman she recognised as Mrs Yul Edochie was May Edochie. She then challenged Judy to produce a marriage certificate bearing the name “Mrs Judith Yul Edochie” before she would accept the argument being made around the name.

That response added another layer to an already complicated dispute because the question of Judy’s relationship with Yul has been central to public discussions surrounding the Edochie family for years. Rather than treating the lawsuit as an isolated defamation dispute, Rita continued to connect her position to the wider relationship controversy.

The disagreement over the name also showed how quickly the legal case could return to the personal history that had fuelled the public arguments in the first place.

September 21 statement changed the tone

September 21, 2026, brought another important development when Rita responded to reports suggesting that she had withdrawn or denied some of her previous statements. Rita rejected that suggestion and said she stood by her earlier social media posts.

She also challenged Judy to appear in court on September 29. Her statement meant that the approaching court date was no longer simply a routine legal development. Rita was publicly telling Judy that she was prepared to meet the dispute in court while maintaining the position she had already expressed online.

The development also meant that Rita was not publicly presenting herself as someone preparing to retract the statements at the centre of the lawsuit. Her comments set the tone for the eventual court appearance and gave the September 29 proceedings added public attention.

September 29 brought both women to Abuja

Tuesday, September 29, 2026, finally brought Judy Austin and Rita Edochie to the court premises in Abuja. Both women arrived separately, and videos from the day showed the 2 actresses around the court.

Rita later spoke to journalists and again defended the nature of her social media activity. She explained that her posts were written on her own platforms and described them as educational messages focused on morality and relationships.

Her comments suggested that she viewed the dispute through the same lens she had used in her earlier public statements. Rita did not present her online commentary as something she was prepared to abandon simply because Judy had filed a lawsuit.

The hearing therefore became more than a simple appearance for the 2 women because statements made around the proceedings quickly became another part of the public drama.

Rita speaks after the proceedings

Rita’s remarks after the hearing became one of the most discussed parts of the day. She said, “Mainly, I talk on morals. I educate the people.”

She also questioned why Judy believed certain posts were specifically about her. Rita’s argument was that she had written the content on her own social media platforms and was speaking generally about issues she considered moral.

Her position placed the question of interpretation at the centre of her public response. Rita suggested that if Judy believed the descriptions applied to her, that was the reason she had connected the posts to herself.

Rita also questioned the ₦1 billion claim and said she was not intimidated by the lawsuit. Her comments ensured that the legal proceedings quickly became another public exchange between the 2 women rather than the end of their long running disagreement.

The confrontation outside the court

Events outside the court added another dramatic element to the September 29 proceedings. Videos circulated showing a group of women confronting Judy as she left the court premises.

The women were heard using phrases including “Husband snatcher” while questioning Judy’s decision to take Rita to court. The footage quickly spread online and became part of the conversation surrounding the hearing.

The incident has to be separated from the actual court proceedings because the confrontation outside the premises is not the same thing as a judicial finding in the defamation case. Reports and public reactions have instead focused on what the footage appeared to show and who was responsible for the group’s actions.

Emeka Ugwuonye later gave one of the strongest reactions to the incident. The lawyer, who previously represented May Edochie, accused Rita of leading the group and described the confrontation as an attempted mob attack on Judy.

Emeka Ugwuonye

Ugwuonye said he intended to report the women involved to the police and argued that the video could become relevant to the wider legal dispute. Those statements represent Ugwuonye’s account and allegations about the incident, rather than findings already established by the court.

Ugwuonye enters the post hearing drama

Ugwuonye’s involvement added another familiar name to the developing story because of his previous legal connection to May Edochie.

Following the confrontation outside the court, Ugwuonye criticised what he described as an attack against Judy and focused attention on Rita’s alleged role in the incident. His comments gave the confrontation another legal dimension because he suggested that the events outside the court could have consequences beyond the immediate exchange.

His reaction also drew attention to the relationship between the current dispute and the earlier legal battles involving members of the Edochie family. Ugwuonye had previously represented May, making his involvement in the aftermath of Judy and Rita’s hearing particularly notable.

The situation became even more unusual when Judy herself later contacted Ugwuonye during a Facebook Live session.

The phone call that became another talking point

After leaving court on September 29, Judy Austin reportedly called Emeka Ugwuonye while he was conducting a Facebook Live session. The call became public because Ugwuonye apparently did not successfully mute it.

People watching the livestream were therefore able to hear parts of the conversation, creating another wave of online reactions shortly after the court proceedings had ended.

Reports indicated that Judy was seeking feedback following the day’s proceedings. The fact that the call happened between Judy and a lawyer who had previously represented May Edochie immediately attracted attention because of Ugwuonye’s history with the wider Edochie family dispute.

The contents and purpose of the call should however be treated carefully. Social media discussions have produced different interpretations, but those interpretations are separate from the portions of the conversation that were actually heard during the livestream.

The phone call nevertheless became one of the most talked about developments connected to the September 29 hearing because it brought together 3 names that had already occupied different sides of the wider controversy.

The “cry blood” comment

Another statement from Rita that gained attention after the hearing was her use of the phrase “cry blood” while discussing Judy and the lawsuit.

The remark circulated widely online and became part of the continuing exchange between both sides. Ugwuonye later highlighted the statement while criticising Rita’s conduct and the events surrounding the court appearance.

Once again, the meaning attached to the remark by people reacting online should be separated from any formal determination by the court. The reported court proceedings had not established that the statement amounted to any legal offence or had determined its legal significance.

Rita’s comments, however, contributed to the increasingly heated public atmosphere surrounding the case and ensured that the September 29 hearing remained a major subject of conversation after both women had left the court premises.

Emmanuel Obasi had his own courtroom battle

While Judy and Rita’s case attracted much of the attention on September 29, another legal dispute involving Judy was also moving through the courts.

Judy had separately sued her former husband, Emmanuel Obasi. That case also involves a ₦1 billion claim for general damages, alongside claims for aggravated and exemplary damages and legal costs.

The Obasi case is separate from the Rita Edochie defamation suit. The 2 cases should therefore not be described as a single ₦2 billion lawsuit, even though the combined figures have produced that description in some public discussions.

Mr Obasi

Obasi has challenged the jurisdiction of the court to hear his case. Following the September 29 proceedings, he said his lawyers had served the opposing legal team with an application challenging whether the court had jurisdiction over the matter.

The case was also reportedly adjourned to November 24, 2026, placing the next stage of the Obasi dispute on the same date reported for the Rita case.

Obasi’s position on the former marriage

The dispute between Judy and Obasi has its own history, with Obasi previously making allegations concerning their former marriage, Judy’s relationship with Yul Edochie and issues surrounding access to their children.

Judy has rejected those allegations and maintained that her marriage to Obasi ended in 2013. She has also maintained that she did not have an intimate relationship with Yul while she was still married to Obasi.

Obasi has separately spoken about the impact of the dispute on his relationship with the children. He previously described the legal case as an opportunity that could potentially allow him to see his children in court after saying he had not seen them for more than 12 years.

That remains Obasi’s account of the family situation, while the legal questions raised in his case are separate from the defamation allegations Judy brought against Rita.

May Edochie remains part of the wider story

May Edochie’s name continues to appear around the dispute because of the history connecting her to Yul Edochie and the legal and public battles that followed the breakdown of their marriage.

May Edochie

Her connection to the current drama is also strengthened by Ugwuonye’s previous role as her lawyer. That background explains why Ugwuonye’s reaction to the events involving Judy and Rita attracted so much attention after September 29.

The current Rita case is not a case brought by May against Judy, nor is Rita’s ₦1 billion case the same proceeding as the disputes previously involving May. Each legal matter has its own parties and claims.

On September 30, May Edochie posted a dancing video after the court proceedings. She did not explicitly say the video was connected to the case, but its timing led social-media users to connect it with the court development

Yul Edochie’s place in the dispute

Yul Edochie remains central to the personal history behind much of the public controversy, although he is not the defendant in Judy’s ₦1 billion defamation case against Rita.

The dispute surrounding Judy, Yul and May has been discussed publicly for years, and Rita’s criticism of Judy has frequently been linked to that wider history.

September 29 also produced questions about Yul’s response because the court appearance took place on the same day he publicly promoted his film My Star rather than directly addressing the proceedings.

Judy had also promoted Yul’s movie several days earlier, adding another detail to the day’s social media activity.

Those posts, however, do not change the legal position in the Rita case. The court proceedings concern Judy’s claims against Rita, while Yul remains outside that particular case as a defendant.

The ₦2 billion confusion explained

Much of the confusion surrounding the story comes from the fact that Judy has 2 separate legal disputes involving ₦1 billion claims.

The first is Judy Austin versus Rita Edochie, where Judy is seeking ₦1 billion in general damages over alleged defamatory statements.

The second is Judy Austin versus Emmanuel Obasi, where Judy is also seeking ₦1 billion in general damages alongside other claimed damages and legal costs.

Adding the headline figures produces ₦2 billion, but that does not mean there is one lawsuit in which Rita and Obasi are jointly facing Judy.

The parties are different, the claims are different and the legal issues are different. The only major connection is that both cases involve Judy and both carry a reported ₦1 billion general damages claim.

That clarification becomes important when following the next stage of the proceedings because developments in one case should not automatically be treated as developments in the other.

The court has not decided the ₦1 billion claim

The September 29 appearance did not produce a final judgment in Judy’s defamation case against Rita.

There has been no reported court finding that Rita defamed Judy, just as there has been no reported judgment ordering Rita to pay Judy ₦1 billion.

The allegations remain before the court, with the parties continuing to present their respective positions.

That means the statements made outside the courtroom should not be confused with the eventual legal determination. Rita’s public defence of her social media posts remains her position, while Judy’s claims remain allegations to be determined through the legal process.

The same principle applies to the allegations surrounding the confrontation outside the court. Claims made by Ugwuonye or other individuals about that incident are separate from any finding the court may eventually make.

November 24 becomes the next date to watch

The next reported date for the ongoing proceedings is November 24, 2026.

By that point, the legal teams will have another opportunity to advance the respective cases, while the jurisdictional challenge raised in the Obasi matter will also remain an important part of that separate dispute.

For the Rita case, the central question remains Judy’s claim that Rita’s publications were defamatory and Rita’s position that her statements were part of her moral and educational commentary.

For the Obasi case, the jurisdictional challenge adds another legal question before the substantive claims can move forward.

The September 29 hearing therefore ended without resolving the wider dispute, but it produced enough developments to keep the story firmly in the public eye.

A courtroom dispute with another chapter ahead

Judy Austin’s lawsuit against Rita Edochie has now moved beyond social media exchanges and into a formal legal process, but the September 29 proceedings showed that the public controversy surrounding the case remains intense.

Rita left the hearing maintaining her position, Judy continued with her legal claim, Ugwuonye reacted strongly to the confrontation outside the court, Obasi continued with his separate legal challenge and May Edochie remained connected to the story through the history surrounding the wider family dispute and her former lawyer’s involvement.

The phone call during Ugwuonye’s Facebook Live added another unexpected moment, while Rita’s “cry blood” comment and the confrontation outside the court created fresh material for public discussion.

For now, the most important legal point remains straightforward. Judy is seeking ₦1 billion from Rita over alleged defamation, but the court has not yet ruled that Rita defamed her and has not awarded Judy the money she is seeking.

The same date, November 24, 2026, now stands as the next reported point for further developments in the separate cases involving Rita Edochie and Emmanuel Obasi.

Until then, the statements made by the different people involved remain part of a dispute that has already travelled from social media posts to court documents, from public accusations to courtroom proceedings and from the hearing itself to another round of reactions outside the court.
