AT A GLANCE: LEAGUE lists holders of Yoruba Land Islamic chieftaincy titles, warns against fake conferment

League of Imams and Alfas in Yoruba Land

The League of Imams and Alfas in Yoruba Land has released a list of holders of its distinguished Islamic chieftaincy titles while warning against unauthorised use or conferment of the positions.

The organisation made this known in an official disclaimer dated September 24, 2026, issued in response to what it described as the unauthorised conferment of Islamic chieftaincy titles associated with the League.

According to the League, the titles have traditionally been used to honour Muslims who demonstrated “outstanding service, commitment, sacrifice and contributions to Islam and the welfare of the Muslim Ummah in Yoruba Land.”

Among the current holders listed by the organisation is Ambassador Sharafa Tunji Ishola (OFR), who holds the title of Baba Adinni of Yoruba Land.

The Aare Musulumi of Yoruba Land title is held by Alhaji Daud Makanjuola Akinola D-Darmak, while Asiwaju (Dr.) Khamis Olatunde Badmus is the Asiwaju Adinni of Yoruba Land.

Alhaja Sekinat Adekola is listed as Iya Adinni of Yoruba Land, while Alhaja Chief Sedeekat Bolade Aderibigbe holds the title of Iyalode Adinni of Yoruba Land.

The League also identified Alhaji Mustapha AbdulRahman Abiola Zico as Borokinni Adinni of Yoruba Land and Alhaji AbdulRasheed Olawoore Omo Oku-Orun as Seriki Adinni of Yoruba Land.

Alhaji AbdulGaniy Alaka is listed as Giwa Adinni of Yoruba Land, while Alhaji Moriwiyu Kayode Bakare holds the title of Balogun Adinni of Yoruba Land.

Olori Agba Moriliat Iyabode Adetona is identified as the Asiwaju Obinrin Adinni of Yoruba Land.

Abiola, Arisekola among past holders

The League also traced some of the titles to prominent figures who previously held them, including the late businessman, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, popularly known as MKO Abiola.

It said historical accounts indicated that Abiola received the Baba Adinni of Yoruba Land title in the 1980s from clerics associated with the League.

Following his death, the organisation said the title was subsequently conferred on Ambassador Sharafa Tunji Ishola, who is its current holder.

The late businessman, AbdulAzeez Arisekola Alao, was identified as the first holder of the Aare Musulumi of Yoruba Land title after his installation in 1980.

The League said the position is now occupied by Alhaji Daud Makanjuola Akinola D-Darmak, who has also been identified in recent reports as Aare Musulumi of Yoruba Land, Edo and Delta States.

The late AbdulYekinni Adeojo was listed as a former holder of the Seriki Adinni of Yoruba Land title.

The organisation also mentioned Sheikh Akinola Garuba, OON, the late Grand Chief Imam of Lagos and former Vice President of the League, among its prominent past Chief Imams.

The League said the continued succession of the titles reflected their place within its established heritage and institutional traditions.

It consequently warned that the titles should not be duplicated, misrepresented or publicly presented as having been conferred by the organisation when they were not.

The clarification comes as the League seeks to distinguish its recognised Islamic chieftaincy titles and their holders from purported appointments that it says were not authorised by the organisation.
