Xbox Nano Controller: Price, Release Date, Features and How to Pre-Order Microsoft’s Tiny Gamepad

Microsoft has built a controller that fits in a jeans pocket. The company revealed the Xbox Nano Controller on October 14, and it launches on November 4 for $49.99 and works with Xbox consoles, PC, iOS, Android and select smart TVs. Pre-orders are already open.

On paper, it sounds like a modest accessory, but the Nano is the smallest gamepad Xbox has ever made, and it arrives at a price some critics are already questioning.

How small is the Xbox Nano Controller?

The Nano measures a bit over five inches long and weighs 3.5 ounces, making it the smallest controller Microsoft has released. Microsoft says it is lighter and shorter than most modern smartphones. Despite the size, it keeps all 18 standard gameplay inputs, so you don’t lose any buttons for portability.

Microsoft’s pitch is fairly clear. The company says the compact shape could suit younger players and anyone with smaller hands. It also pointed to family games like Minecraft Dungeons II, where up to four players can team up in local co-op. A pad this size is easy to toss in a bag and hand to a kid on the sofa.

Windows Central’s writer said the shape reminded him of the old Super Nintendo pad. He also noted it resembles a TV remote in size and weight, so it can sit on a coffee table without taking up room.

Xbox Nano Controller features

Here is what Microsoft has confirmed so far:

  • Connectivity: Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth
  • Power: a built-in rechargeable battery
  • Action button: an extra button you can program through the Xbox Accessories app, for things like screenshots or gameplay clips
  • Compatibility: Xbox consoles, Windows PC, iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, and select smart TVs

The Bluetooth support is what makes the Nano useful away from a console. It pairs with a phone for cloud gaming, or with a TV that supports gamepads, without any extra hardware.

What the Xbox Nano Controller is missing

Several details are still unclear. Microsoft hasn’t shared battery life or colour options, and there is no word yet on rumble or impulse triggers. The tech specs also suggest no USB-C charging cable in the box, so you may need to supply your own.

Windows Central was more pointed. It said $49.99 is a lot to ask without premium thumbstick technology such as Hall Effect or TMR, and the Nano has neither. The same report adds that the controller has no direct Wi-Fi link for Xbox Cloud Gaming and relies on Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth, which can feel less responsive. Other outlets describe the connectivity differently, so check the final spec sheet before you buy.

Xbox Nano Controller price

The controller costs $49.99 in the US and £44.99 in the UK. That puts it above some rivals in the compact space. CRKD’s Atom+ sells for $29.99 and 8BitDo’s Lite 2 for $34.99. TechPowerUp suggested that native Xbox Wireless support might justify part of the premium, but that battery life will probably decide whether it is worth it.

Engadget made a similar comparison, noting that the Nano reminds it of 8BitDo’s portable pads, though it isn’t quite as tiny as that brand’s Micro controller.

Xbox Nano Controller release date and where it launches

The release date is November 4, 2026. Microsoft is launching it across a long list of markets: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Czechia, Denmark, the Dominican Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Guatemala, Hong Kong SAR, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom and the United States. More markets will follow.

No African country is on that first list. Readers in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or South Africa will have to wait for the later rollout, or buy through an importer or a travelling friend. Microsoft hasn’t given a date for further markets.

How to pre-order the Xbox Nano Controller

Pre-orders are open now through Xbox.com, and the Microsoft Store also lists it. To order:

  1. Open Xbox.com or the Microsoft Store in a supported country.
  2. Search for “Xbox Nano Controller” and add it to your cart.
  3. Check out at $49.99, or £44.99 in the UK. Check shipping costs before you pay.
  4. Look for a charging cable separately, since one may not come in the box.

Xbox is attaching the Nano to a few US holiday deals. Buyers of select Samsung TVs can get a Nano Controller with two months of Game Pass Ultimate for new members. A similar offer comes with Meta Quest headsets. Both are limited to new Game Pass members in the US.

Xbox Nano Controller

The timing matters for cloud gaming. GameSpot reports that Microsoft will soon put caps on how much you can stream before you must pay more. A pocket controller that works with TVs and VR headsets makes the most sense for streaming, so those limits could shape how useful the Nano turns out to be.

The Nano arrives as Xbox gets ready to mark its 25th anniversary next month, and Thurrott notes that a leaked Xbox Elite Series 3 controller is expected to be announced soon. It was also the second controller revealed on the day, after Sony showed a limited-edition DualSense for Gran Turismo.

For now, the Nano looks like a controller for portability and smaller hands rather than for competitive players. Whether $49.99 is fair will depend on reviews, especially for battery life, trigger feel and how stable the Bluetooth connection is. Microsoft’s own pricing and the premium rivals charge will make for an interesting comparison once units are in reviewers’ hands.
