The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians to take a cue from the outcome of the United States midterm elections and use their votes to demand a change of government in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement on Wednesday, Bolaji Abdullahi, its national publicity secretary, said the American elections showed that citizens could hold those in power accountable through the ballot.

The ADC described the outcome of Tuesday’s midterm polls as a strong rejection of the ruling Republican Party, its leadership and its economic policies.

The party said the results reinforced the principle that political power ultimately belongs to the electorate, rather than those occupying public office or controlling government.

“Americans have shown that when politicians become arrogant, when policies punish ordinary people, and when those in power mistake popularity for a permanent licence to govern, the ballot box remains the ultimate instrument of accountability.

“American voters understand something Nigerians must also learn: elections are about the welfare of the citizens, not sentiments, political loyalties or personality cults. No leader is bigger than the people, and no political party is entitled to power forever,” the ADC said.

The party also accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of worsening the country’s economic difficulties, insecurity and declining employment opportunities.

It argued that Nigerians should reconsider their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the next general election, citing the effects of the government’s policies on citizens.

“We cannot continue to complain about the cost of living while voting for a President who has made life unaffordable. We cannot demand security while rewarding failure. We cannot earnestly yearn for change while sustaining the very political system responsible for our collective impoverishment.

“History beckons in 2027. Our voters’ cards must become instruments of change, not souvenirs of citizenship. Nigerians must turn out massively and vote for their own interests.

“The ADC and its candidates are offering Nigerians a clear alternative: Make Nigeria Affordable Again. Make Nigeria Safe Again. Give Nigerians Jobs Again.

“If Americans can use their votes to demand better, Nigerians can do the same. In 2027, let our votes speak louder than the APC-induced suffering.”

The ADC urged Nigerians to participate in the 2027 elections and use their voter cards to determine the country’s political future.

The party also highlighted affordability, security and job creation as the central themes of the alternative it said it was offering voters.
