On November 7, 1996, 144 people on board were killed when a Nigerian Boeing 727 crashed into a lagoon near Ejirin, about 25 miles from Lagos.
The aircraft, ADC Airlines Flight 086, registration 5N-BBG, was on a domestic flight from Port Harcourt to Lagos when the accident occurred.
The Boeing 727-231 was carrying 134 passengers and 10 crew members. There were no survivors.
According to reports, the pilot lost control of the aircraft while taking evasive action to avoid a mid-air collision with another aircraft, a Triax Airlines Boeing 727 heading to Enugu.
The aircraft plunged into the lagoon near Ejirin, in the Itoikin area of Epe, and disintegrated on impact.
A later investigation blamed the crash on “untidy traffic separation by the radar controller” and an error in judgment by the pilot of Flight 086 while turning to avoid the other aircraft.
