Participate more in politics – Group urges Nigerian women

The National President, Stand up for Women Society, a gender-based organisation, Mrs Deborah Ijadele-Adetona, has called on women in Plateau to participate more in politics.

Ijadele-Adetona made this call during the inauguration of Plateau state executive council of the society on Sunday in Jos.

According to her, it is high time women come out to participate fully in politics and also vie for positions.

“Today’s event is the starting point for the development of our society which aims on excellent platform prepared to drive women to greater heights, ” she said.

She also said that the society would aim at promoting, updating and upgrading women in Nigeria.

Ijadele-Adetona said that the society advocates women rights and development to build confidence and qualify them for active participation in public matters.

“Our objectives are to empower women to improve their quality of life by promoting and disseminating knowledge and information about women’s roles in the society.

“The society will also educate young girls to develop and promote programmes with relevant agencies to train privileged women and to ensure their interest are taken into account in all policy making decision and governance,” she said.

The guest speaker, Mrs Olwia Dazyem, called on women to get ready to participate fully in politics.

Also speaking at the occasion, the state chairperson of the society, Mrs Grace Gora, said that the society main objective was to reach out to all women, especially the grassroots women, vulnerable and the less-privileged.

“We intend to empower women politically, emotionally and socially so they can stand among their equals anywhere in the world,” she said.

Highpoints of the inauguration included calling out of executive council members for recognition and oath-taking.
