2 men remanded for alleged illicit drug deals

A Federal High Court in Kaduna on Wednesday ordered the remand of two men, Obinna Anene and Aliyu Yakubu, for allegedly dealing in  3.5kg of tramadol and 3kg of diazepam.

Anene, 31 a resident of Buwaya Street Goni-gora and Yakubu, 35, of Rigan Jawo Mando, are standing trial for criminal conspiracy and illegal possession of drugs.

The duo were arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kaduna for the alleged offences.

Justice Mohammed Garba, ordered that the defendants be remanded in the Kaduna Correctional Centre.

Garba adjourned the matter until Aug. 24 for ruling on their bail application.

The prosecutor, T. J. Atserhegh, told the court that defendants on May 31, on  Abuja Junction, Kaduna, conspired among themselves and unlawfully dealt in 3.5kg of tramadol and 3kg of diazepam popularly known as valium.

He said their offences are contrary to and punishable under Sections 14(b) and 20 sub section 2(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Following their plea of not guilty, the prosecutor asked the court for a trial date.

Atserhegh also asked the court to remand the defendants in the custody of Nigeria Correctional Service till the determination of the charges against them.

However, counsel to Yakubu, Mr V.A.B. Ewuzie, told the court that he has a pending motion for bail for the defendant and prayed the court to allow him to move the application.

While moving the bail application, Ewuzie told the court that the defendant will not jump bail as he will provide reliable sureties.
