A 38-year-old security guard, Saliu Dairi, has been killed by some hoodlums who attacked him and his colleague, one Isiaka Samba, on their duty post on Alimosho Road, Pako bus stop, Lagos.

The deceased, Dairi was said to have died from machete cuts inflicted on him by the thugs while Samba sustained injuries to an eye.

It was gathered that the guards stopped the hoodlums wielding cutlasses around 1am while they were passing through the area and demanded to know where they were heading for.

The hoodlums reportedly got angry and descended on the guards, attacking them with cutlasses and sticks.

According to The PUNCH, a shop owner in the area, David Afolabi said it was a resident who heard the guards groaning with pains that alerted other neighbours.

Afolabi said, “I knew about the incident when I opened my shop on Wednesday, April 1. I learnt the guards asked those boys about their mission in the area the previous night. Instead of replying, they attacked the guards with cutlasses and killed one of them. The other one sustained injuries to one eye and on admission at a hospital. The incident was reported at the Gowon Estate Division.”

Another resident, Michael, said police arrested two suspects in connection with the attack.

“Police visited the scene and removed the corpse of the guard. The corpse was deposited in the Mainland General Hospital morgue, Yaba. A big stone with blood stains was also recovered. I learnt two persons were arrested,” he said.

Police spokesperson in the state, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said it was an unprovoked attack on the guards, noting that the corpse had been released to the deceased’s family for burial.

Adejobi said, “We heard some hoodlums attacked the guard and his colleagues while they were on duty at No 35, Alimosho Road, Pako, Lagos. Others sustained injuries while he gave up the ghost. His family came to the police to claim his corpse as they insisted they didn’t want any case on his death. The corpse was released to them and was buried according to Islamic rites.

“We will be working on any clue we have on the incident. The Commissioner of Police has ordered the DPO (Divisional Police Officer) to work with the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, and other tactical squads of the command to unravel the incident and bring the culprits to book in no time.”
