Kaduna spends N2.5bn annually to evacuate refuse in 3 towns – Commissioner

The Kaduna state government has stated that it spends N211 million monthly on refuse evacuation across the three metropolitan cities in the state.

This was disclosed on Saturday in an interview by the state commissioner for environment and natural resources, Husseini Ibrahim.

This amounts to N2.532 billion annually of the N237.52 billion budget signed by Nasir el-Rufai, the state governor, in December.

According to Ibrahim, Kaduna hosts the third-largest city in the country and generates huge refuse owing to the rising population.

He said heaps of refuse were being evacuated mainly from Zaria, Kafanchan and Kaduna metropolises.

Ibrahim said the state government engaged the services of refuse contractors to ensure proper evacuation of waste across the state.

He asked residents to assist the state government in its quest to keep the environment clean and safe by ensuring proper use of the refuse dumps in designated areas across the state.

He also asked residents to take ownership of the exercise by informing the government whenever refuse was not promptly evacuated.
