Gunmen invade Kogi community, kill six

Police in Kogi state has stated that six persons were killed while some properties were razed following an attack by gunmen on Bagana community of Omala LGA in the state.

This was confirmed on Wednesday by the commissioner of police in Kogi, Idrisu Dabban after a visit to the area.

According to NAN report, the attackers were said to have invaded the community on Monday and targeted the palace of Anyebe Salifu, a traditional ruler.

A witness who doubles as son of the traditional ruler identified as Yakubu Salifu said the assailants invaded the community at about 7:30am when many residents had gone to the farm and headed straight to his father’s palace.

The attackers were said to to have set the palace ablaze, and killed several persons, including one Achebe Alih, popularly known as ‘Mama Teacher’.

Salifu was also said to have described the attack as the possible fallout of a clash involving Bagana and Patani communities over land ownership.

Another witness said the attack may not be unconnected to a clan said to be unsupportive of the traditional ruler.

Villagers were said to have escaped into a nearby bush for safety when the gunmen invaded the area.

Speaking after a visit to the community, Ibrahim Aboh, Omala council chairman, appealed for calm and urged residents not to carry out reprisals.

The council chairman also assured residents of the community that the state government is making efforts to resolve the dispute, adding that investigation into the incident is ongoing.

On his part, the Kogi police commissioner assured residents that the command will put necessary measures in place to discourage communal clashes in the area.

While urging the public to come forward with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators, he said those found culpable would face justice.
