Sports ministry dissolves NBBF caretaker committee

Minister of Youths and Sports, Sunday Dare

The ministry of youth and sports development has directed the immediate dissolution of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) caretaker committee headed by Musa Kida.

This was contained in a letter signed and released on Wedneaday by NBBF’s secretary-general, Afolabi-Oluwayemi Olabisi.

In the letter, Olabisi recounted how the NBBF caretaker committee was constituted by Sunday Dare, minister of youths and sports development, earlier this year to “run the affairs of its federation ahead of elections of a new board”.

He, however, added that the committee’s dissolution was with immediate effect.

“As you may recall that the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare, on May 4, 2021, inaugurated the Caretaker Committees for 31 National Sports Federations, including Basketball, to run the affairs of the respective Federations ahead of elections of their new Boards,” the letter read.

“As the Nigeria Basketball Federation prepares for its Elective Congress, I am directed to inform you that the Federation’s Caretaker Committee has been dissolved with immediate effect.

“The Federation appreciates your contribution to the development of Basketball in Nigeria.”

The committee’s dissolution comes barely 24 hours after the ministry of sports and youth development suspended the elective congress and postponed the election indefinitely.

Kida, in response, insisted that the election would go ahead as planned, adding that the ministry had no right to issue such directives.

He also described the directives as “an overreach to usurp the powers of the NBBF Congress.”

Kida urged the delegate and candidates to disregard the news unless it comes from the NBBF congress.
