Sylvester Oromoni: Heavy security presence at Dowen College over possible reopening

Armed policemen with Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) on Monday took over the premises of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos following insinuations that the school may be reopened soon.

According to Vanguard, apart from the APCs deployed, mobile policemen in no fewer than five vehicles were keeping watch over the school premises as well as the dormitory located opposite it.

WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that Sylvester Oromoni’s cousin, Perry Oromoni, took to social media to alleged that some senior pupils of the college beat him up in his hostel room for refusing to join a cult.

But the school denied the claim, stating that the boy complained of pain in his legs and hip following an injury he sustained while playing football.

The Lagos State Government had shut down the school indefinitely to ensure thorough investigation.
The presence of the security men is not unconnected with threats by some youths from the Niger Delta region to ensure that the school is not reopened for business until justice is done concerning the death of Sylvester.

This publication also reported that the uproar generated by the death of Sylvester also led to the members of the board of the school stepping down.

The Lagos State Ministry of Education last month contemplated reopening the school but almost immediately backed down.

Vanguard reported that sources in the ministry said that the order to reopen it lies with state governor,  Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
