Adamawa: I ventured into armed robbery to raise money to pay school fees – SS 2 Student confesses

Abubakar Mohammed, SS II student of Demsawo Government Secondary School in Yola, Adamawa state, who was arrested for armed robbery has claimed that he ventured into crime so as to raise money to pay his school fees.

The 23-year-old suspect, who admitted committing the alleged crime was arraigned before Yola Magistrate Court I on one count charge of armed robbery.

The crime runs contrary to section 287 of the state penal code law.

The student was said to have broke into the house of one Maryam Jamilu at Wauru Jabbe in Yola South LGA in a broad day light brandishing a knife and threatening to kill her.

Mohammed allegedly attacked her on the 11th February, 2022 in her palour where he robbed her of her mobile phone valued at N68, 000, another phone valued N6000 and the sum of N200 cash.

While Maryam was seeing her visitor off after the said operation, she sighted the suspect and raised an alarm which led to his arrest.

After the plea of the defendant was taken, the prosecutor, ASP Francis Audu, urged the court to remand the defendant at a correctional centre to enable them transmit case file to DPP for legal advice considering the nature of the offence.

In his ruling, the presiding judge, Abdullahi Mohammed Digil, ordered the remand of the defendant and adjourned the matter as prayed by the prosecutor.

The defendant TOLD journalists that he engaged in armed robbery so as to raise money to pay his 1st and 2nd terms school fees, adding that his father is dead.
