Man kills girl in Kwara over witchcraft allegation

A man identified as Umoru Jidah, has been arraigned for killing a girl, Khadijat Issa, over suspicion of her possessing witchcraft at Gwanara area of Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The suspect was charged with a single-count charge of culpable homicide which contravenes Section 221 of the Penal Code.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the victim’s elder brother, Mohammed Aliyu, reported the matter to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) at Gwanara that his sister was missing.

The police prosecutor, ASP Moshood Adebayo told the court that during investigation Jidah confessed that he ambushed Khadijat along a bush path and hit her with a stick on her head before leaving her for dead.

Adebayo further told the court that, “He confessed that he attacked her because she was a witch and used her witchcraft to kill his sister in-law by the name Hassana.

“After killing her, Jidah ran to Yashikira, a nearby community, before he was arrested by the police.”

Upon the request of the prosecutor, the Magistrate, Mohammed, ruled that the suspect be remanded in a correctional facility and adjourned the case to May 31.
