2023 presidency: I will give priority to state police if elected – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said he will proffer a drastic and lasting solution to the security crisis bedeviling the country if elected.

The former Anambra State governor made the disclosure when he featured on Channels TV programme, ‘Politics Today,’ on Monday.

Obi said the governors should shoulder the responsibility of providing adequate security for lives and properties in their respective states.

He implored the Federal Government to do more in terms of security.

Obi’s comments came a few hours after the terrorists who attacked the Kaduna-Abuja train on March 28, 2022, released three abductees out of the 43 persons in captivity.

He stated, ‘’To improve the security situation in Nigeria, as President, I will ensure the economy works and more people are pulled out of poverty.

“The more you remove people out of poverty, the more you reduce criminality. It is critical and important, as long as the economy continues to head south like we are seeing today, criminality will be rising.’’

To further improve the security situation in the country, Obi noted that every state would be responsible for its security.

He noted, “I will make sure that the governors are given the powers to secure their state. Even if we have federal police, they will be responsible and report to the governor.

“Additionally, the states will be allowed to have their security system if possible,’’ Obi said
