Three suspected armed robbers arrested have narrated how their attempt to escape with a robbed car was halted by an accident in Kano State.

The suspects said they had succeeded in robbing the car belonging to one Sunusi Muhammad, but that while they were running away to their destination they had an accident which led to their arrest.

The lead suspect, Habibu Aliyu, said, “We followed him (Muhammad) to his house in Yan’awaki Quarters in Kano; we pointed a gun at him and collected the car and his phone. We ran immediately, but unfortunately we had an accident on our way. We abandoned the car but forgot our phone which was used to track us.”

Aliyu further confessed that, “I had never handled a gun. That was my first time, and I really regret it. I will never do it again.”

Another suspect, 24-year-old Aliyu Abdullahi said they rent arms and ammunition used for robbery. He said, “We hire them from someone. We don’t even know him; we just got his phone number.”

However, the state’s police spokesman, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said, “Following intelligence gathering, the following suspects: Habibu Aliyu (27), Sulaiman Aliyu (25), all of Plateau State; and Aliyu Abdullahi (24) of Naibawa Quarters, Kano, were arrested. On investigation, the suspects confessed to the commission of the crime and other robbery attacks in Kano.

“One Makarov pistol, six rounds of 9mm live ammunition and one empty shell were recovered from them.”
