Mapoly students protest harsh policies

Mapoly student protest

Students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) have staged a peaceful protest against some of the institution’s policies and fees increment. The students who came out in their numbers boycotted the ongoing examinations to protest the introduction of the registration fee, and bad welfare, amongst others.

Recall that the management was under heavy criticism recently after the introduction of a #20,000 registration fee which was non-existent until September. The management however slashed the fees to fifty percent yesterday after a series of engagements with student associations. Students who were not okay with this decision requested a total removal.

Within Nigeria gathered that the protest commenced at 6:00 am at the main gate of the institution. We also gathered that the protest has been peaceful with security agencies present at the scene.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ogun state PRO, Olufemi Owoeye said the protest would continue until the management accepted their demands.

“Students are here contrary to the antics of the management, we have a very large number. We are well over 2000 and as a matter of fact, at the peak of the protest, we had over 7000 students who came to demand their rights. Our demands are simple, we just need them to attend to our demands and they should stop attempting to turn the students against themselves.”

Owoeye said that none of the management staff is yet to address them as at the time of filing this report.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ogun state, has earlier alleged the management of extortion and enacting harsh policies. In their demands made yesterday through a press statement signed by the association’s chairman, Damilola Kehinde, and PRO, Olufemi Owoeye, the students demanded that management remove the ‘unlawful and indefensible’ registration fee, reintroduce the 60-40 payment option as promised, fix a date for the next Students Union election, and improve the student’s overall welfare and give room for social activities on campus.
