U-17 WWC: Flamingos tackle USA, seek to break quarter-final jinx

The United States of America and Nigeria’s Flamingos will face off for a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India on Friday.

This meeting will be the first of its kind between the two nations.

Six times in the previous editions, the Flamingos were unable to advance to the semifinals.

The West Africans will participate in the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive time.

Forward Opeyemi Ajakaye, though yet to register a goal for Nigeria in the competition, has been the team’s key star.

The 16-year-old won back-to-back Player of the Match against New Zealand and Chile and much will be expected from her against the Americans.

Head Coach, Bankole Olowookere will also bank on the likes of Aminat Bello, Blessing Emmanuel Bisola Mosaku and captain Alvine Dah-Zossu to deliver the goods for his side.

The Americans will hope to reach the semis for the first time since 2008 when they finished as runners-up at the inaugural edition in New Zealand.
