Oyo artisan faces 14 years in prison after arraignment over infant theft

One Soliu Oladejo, an artisan, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Oyo State Family Court sitting in Iyaganku, for allegedly stealing a two-year-old child.

The police charged the 39-year-old suspect with conspiracy and child stealing.

The prosecution counsel, Insp. Folake Ewe, told the court that the defendant and others at large, allegedly conspired to commit the offence.

Ewe said Oladejo on July 21, 2020 between 9a.m and 9pm at Akobi area, Popo, Ibadan, allegedly took the child from the custody of her parents.

She said the offence contravenes sections 371 and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The chief magistrate, Mrs Patricia Adetuyibi, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the matter until Jan. 12.

If found guilty, he is liable to 14 years’ imprisonment.
