World Cup: Ferdinand defends Messi, says best performance

Lionel Messi’s performance in Argentina’s victory over Australia on Saturday has been dubbed the “best individual performance” at the 2022 World Cup by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

In a BBC interview conducted soon after the Argentinean player scored his 1,000th goal, he praised him.

On Saturday, Messi helped his country win 2-1 and advance to the quarterfinals.

The 35-year-old also set up two big chances for Lautaro Martinez, but the substitute squandered them, as the South Americans clung on in the late stages.

Speaking with BBC, Ferdinand said, “Messi has put on the best individual performance we’ve seen at this World Cup so far, by a mile.”

“Showboating, laying shots on a plate for teammates and the audience—it was almost godlike, after everything he does”.
