Gunmen attack, bomb police divisional headquarters in Anambra

27 dead in New Delhi building fire, owners arrested

The Ihiala police divisional headquarters in Anambra state was attacked on Wednesday by gunmen.

The gunmen threw explosives into the building, hence setting it ablaze.

The incident is the latest in the spate of attacks on public assets in the beleaguered South-East. The geopolitical zone has witnessed unprecedented unrest and violent attacks by non state actors in recent months.

Police spokesman in Anambra, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack but said the assailants were promptly repelled.

One abandoned AK-47 rifle was recovered during a gun battle, Ikenga disclosed in a statement on Wednesday.

“The gunmen escaped the scene due to the superior fire of the police operatives although no casualty was recorded,” he police spokesman said.

“Unfortunately, the explosives the gunmen threw inside the police station had already ignited fire that affected the building.”

Mr Ikenga assured that security operations were still ongoing in the area, promising that further details would be communicated to the public.
